telehealth ethics along the continuum of care

When crisis strikes, access to behavioral health care can mean the difference between stability and breakdown—yet too often, services grind to a halt just when clients need them most. Whether it’s a pandemic, natural disaster, or local emergency, clinicians must be equipped to deliver care without missing a beat. This course gives you the tools to ethically, legally, and confidently continue treatment through telehealth across every stage of care.

When your clients face chaos, uncertainty, or isolation, your ability to show up—prepared and professional—can be life-changing. This course empowers you to be that steady presence when it matters most.

Dr. Mita Johnson, Gerard Schmidt, and Rose Maire are nationally recognized leaders in behavioral health ethics, each with deep roots in training, supervision, and clinical leadership. As past and present leaders of NAADAC and the NCC AP Ethics Committee, they bring extensive expertise in ethical decision-making, addiction counseling, and telehealth best practices—making them ideally suited to guide clinicians through the challenges of delivering care virtually.

Their teaching approach is both practical and compassionate. With a focus on real-world applications, they guide learners through the ethical, logistical, and technological complexities of telehealth using checklists, decision frameworks, and role-specific considerations that empower providers to act with clarity and confidence.

This self-paced course covers a full range of topics clinicians must master to offer quality care in a virtual format. You'll learn how to assess telehealth readiness for both clients and staff, implement informed consent protocols, verify session privacy and safety, and align with ethical codes and legal regulations. The course also includes in-depth instruction on technology setup, session preparation, platform security, and maintaining continuity of care in emergencies.

Key Takeaways:

  • Telehealth Readiness in Crisis: Learn how to quickly implement ethical and effective telehealth services during emergencies.

  • Client & Staff Preparation: Gain practical strategies to prepare clients and team members for successful telehealth engagement.

  • Ethical & Legal Compliance: Understand the essential components of informed consent and professional standards for virtual care.

Why this course?

  • Trusted Leadership: Learn from three of the most respected names in the field of behavioral health ethics and telehealth.

  • Essential Tools: Walk away with practical checklists and a roadmap to telehealth readiness that you can apply immediately.

  • Mission-Driven Quality: Brought to you by the Telehealth Certification Institute, a company dedicated to excellence, innovation, and equipping clinicians with actionable tools that enhance care.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain why national emergencies, like pandemics, require mobile and easily accessible telehealth tools for delivering services to clients and identify what clients need to know in order to fully benefit from these mobile telehealth services.

  • Explore what changes in practice have to occur to embrace telehealth legally, ethically, and practically.

  • Define the key components of a technology informed consent, practitioner telehealth checklist, and client telehealth checklist.

If you're ready to strengthen your ability to serve clients through any crisis—without sacrificing ethics, quality, or connection—this course offers the guidance, tools, and confidence to do just that.
