How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor for LPCs in Iowa

As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Iowa, stepping into the role of an approved clinical supervisor allows you to shape the next generation of mental health professionals while advancing your own career. To become an approved clinical supervisor, you must meet specific state requirements. The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers comprehensive training to help you fulfill these requirements and deepen your expertise in clinical supervision.

✅ Eligibility Requirements

To qualify as an approved clinical supervisor in Iowa, you must:

  • Hold an Active Independent License: Be licensed as an independent-level mental health counselor, marital and family therapist, or social worker in Iowa.

  • Possess Clinical Experience: Have a minimum of three years of independent clinical practice.

  • Complete Supervision Training: Successfully finish either:

    • A six-hour continuing education course in clinical supervision, or

    • One graduate-level course in clinical supervision.

  • Demonstrate Ethical Knowledge: Be knowledgeable of the applicable ethical codes and licensing rules governing supervisees.

These requirements are outlined in the Iowa Administrative Code 645—31.7(154D).

🔄 Renewal and Continuing Education

Iowa does not require specific continuing education (CE) hours for the renewal of clinical supervisor status.

The required supervision training — either a six-hour CE course or a graduate-level supervision course — is necessary to qualify as an approved clinical supervisor.
