How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Alabama: A Guide for LCSWs
Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) and Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers (LICSWs) in Alabama have the opportunity to shape the future of the profession by becoming board-approved clinical supervisors. This role allows you to guide and support emerging clinicians while enhancing your professional leadership and broadening your career options.

✅ Alabama Requirements to Become a Board-Approved Supervisor
According to the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners (Regulation 850-X-3-.01), here’s what LCSWs and LICSWs must do to become approved clinical supervisors:
Hold an active Alabama LCSW license in good standing
Have at least two (2) years of post-licensure clinical practice
(Required for LICSW supervisors)Complete a board-approved supervisor training program
Note: Telehealth Certification Institute does not currently offer a board-approved training program for initial supervisor approval in Alabama.Submit Form A (the application for board-approved supervisor status) and the required fee
Complete 3 contact hours of continuing education (CE) in supervision before applying
Supervise only within your scope of practice and professional competency
(Recommended) Complete the Child Abuse and Neglect Mandated Reporter Training
Alabama Law §26-14-3 recommends a one-time training for all licensees and applicants. While not currently mandatory for supervisors, it is strongly encouraged.— Alabama Admin. Code r. 850-X-8-.01(4)(e)
🔄 Renewal Requirements for Clinical Supervisors in Alabama
All board-approved clinical supervisors in Alabama—whether LCSW or LICSW—must:
Supervisor-Specific CE Requirement
Complete 3 contact hours of continuing education every biennium
Content must focus on supervision theory, skills, strategies, and/or evaluation
This is in addition to the general CE requirements for LCSW or LICSW licensure

📋 General CE Requirements for License Renewal
In addition to the 3 supervision hours, you must meet the following requirements to keep your LCSW or LICSW license active (Alabama Administrative Code 850-X-8-.01.4):
LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker)
30 total CE contact hours every 2 years
At least 10 hours must be live classroom or synchronous events
At least 3 hours in professional ethics
LICSW (Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker)
30 total CE contact hours every 2 years
At least 10 hours must be live classroom or synchronous events
At least 3 hours in professional ethics
At least 6 hours must be clinical content, including:
3 hours specifically reviewing the current version of the DSM
Proof of DSM training must be submitted to the Board at the time of renewal
⚠️ Supervisors must ensure these general requirements are met in addition to the 3 CE hours in supervision.
