How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Arkansas as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Arkansas as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

If you’re a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Arkansas, becoming an approved clinical supervisor allows you to shape the next generation of mental health professionals. But before you begin supervising, it’s essential to meet the Arkansas clinical supervisor requirements, complete the necessary education, and maintain your status with ongoing CE.

This guide explains exactly how to become a supervisor in Arkansas, highlights the supervision CE renewal requirements, pitfalls to avoid, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support your training needs.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

To become a Board Approved Supervisor in Arkansas, licensed Marriage and Family Therapists must meet a specific set of educational, experiential, and procedural requirements outlined by the Arkansas Board of Examiners in Counseling and Marriage & Family Therapy.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Licensure History: You must hold an active and unrestricted LMFT license in Arkansas and have been fully licensed for at least three years. Your license must be in good standing, with no disciplinary actions.

  • Supervision Education and Experience: You must complete a post-master’s graduate-level course in clinical supervision that includes three hours of academic instruction and eighteen hours of supervised experience providing supervision. This training must be formally documented and must meet the Board’s standards.

  • Application and Board Approval: You’ll need to submit an application for Approved Supervisor Status to the Board, along with the required fee. This application serves as a formal request for approval and includes documentation of your eligibility.

  • Oral Interview: Before you can begin supervising, you must successfully complete an oral interview conducted by the Board. This is a final step to assess your readiness to serve as a clinical supervisor.

Only after completing all of these requirements—experience, coursework, application, and interview—will you receive official approval to supervise MFT licensure candidates in Arkansas.

🔁 Ongoing/Renewal Continuing Education Requirements

Once approved, supervisors must complete six (6) continuing education hours in clinical supervision for each renewal period. These hours must specifically relate to supervision topics—not general clinical practice.

At least half of these hours (three out of six) must be obtained from one of the following:

  • A Board-recognized Arkansas state association, or

  • A workshop or program affiliated with an Arkansas university

The remaining hours may be obtained through out-of-state or national CE providers. Be sure to retain CE certificates and confirm provider recognition with the Board when needed.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

Many well-intentioned clinicians lose supervision credit due to avoidable missteps. Here are pitfalls that can derail the supervision process:

  • Providing supervision before approval. You must receive formal approval before supervising any licensure hours.

  • Skipping the oral interview. This required step must be completed before you’re granted supervisor status.

  • Failing to meet CE requirements. Supervisors who do not complete the full 6 CE hours each cycle—especially the 3 required from in-state sources—may lose their status.

  • Not maintaining adequate records. Always document supervision hours and CE completion for audit readiness.

📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You Meet Supervision CE Requirements

Telehealth Certification Institute offers a wide range of continuing education (CE) courses that can help fulfill Arkansas’s ongoing supervision training requirements.

Please note that TCI provides continuing education courses only, not university-level training.

🧠 Recommended Courses:

Note: At least half of all CE hours required for renewal (three out of six) must be obtained from either a Board-recognized Arkansas state association or a workshop or program affiliated with an Arkansas university. TCI cannot fulfill those 3 hours so you will need to earn those through an Arkansas-specific provider.
