How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Indiana: A Guide for Licensed Counselors

If you're a licensed mental health professional in Indiana looking to expand your role and mentor the next generation of clinicians, becoming an approved clinical supervisor is a rewarding step forward. At Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI), we make it easy to gain the skills, training, and continuing education (CE) you need to confidently step into a supervisory role and support the development of future professionals.

📝 Indiana Supervisor Requirements

According to Indiana Code IC 25-23.6-10.5-6, a “qualified supervisor” must:

  • Hold an active license at the time of supervision as one of the following:

    • Clinical addiction counselor

    • Clinical social worker

    • Marriage and family therapist

    • Physician with training in psychiatric medicine

    • Psychologist

    • Clinical nurse specialist in psychiatric or mental health nursing

    • Another state-regulated addiction counseling professional, or—if the supervision occurred in a state without regulation—a behavioral health professional of equivalent status

  • Have at least five (5) years of experience providing addiction or mental health services

  • Supervise only within their scope of practice and professional training

📚 Continuing Education (CE) Requirements for License Renewal

While Indiana does not require ongoing CE hours specifically for clinical supervisors, pursuing additional supervision training is highly recommended. Advanced education helps you strengthen your supervisory skills, uphold ethical and professional standards, and work toward national credentials such as the Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS).

Continued learning ensures you stay current with best practices and maintain competence in an evolving clinical landscape.
