How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Kentucky (Psychologists)

How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Kentucky (Psychologists)

If you’re a Kentucky-licensed psychologist researching how to become a supervisor in Kentucky, this guide distills the Kentucky clinical supervisor requirements, renewal expectations, and pitfalls that lead to rejected hours. After the rules, you’ll find training options to help you meet the state’s supervision CE requirements efficiently.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a licensed psychologist with Health Service Provider (HSP) designation and be approved by the Board as a clinical supervisor.

  • Obtain prior Board approval of the specific supervisory arrangement (both supervisor and supervisee petition the Board before hours start).

  • Provide weekly, individual, face-to-face supervision (unless an alternative format—e.g., two-way interactive video—is specifically approved by the Board).

  • Complete a Board-approved supervisory training within 12 months of the Board’s approval as a supervisor.

Official rule: 201 KAR 26:171 § 4 — Requirements for Clinical Supervision (Kentucky Board of Examiners of Psychology; Kentucky Legislature).

🔁 Renewal / Ongoing Requirements

Renewal requirement (CE):
Complete at least 3 hours of supervision-specific CE every 3-year renewal cycle (Board may suspend supervisor approval if unmet).

Ongoing supervisory duties (not “renewal” but required at all times):

  • Maintain supervision records for 6 years after the last date of supervision.

  • File Supervisory Reports on schedule according to the supervisee’s credential/status (e.g., semiannual for TLP; annual/biennial for LPA/CP depending on experience; quarterly if sanctioned).

  • Notify the Board within 30 days of any change in supervisor or supervisory arrangement and avoid any lapse in supervision.

Source: 201 KAR 26:171, § 4 and § 5 (Kentucky Board of Examiners of Psychology).

🧾 Pitfalls to avoid

  • Starting supervision before Board approval of the arrangement (hours risk not counting).

  • Using video supervision without explicit Board approval for the alternative format.

  • Missing required reports for the supervisee’s credential/status.

  • Failing supervisor CE/training requirements (3 supervision CE hours every 3 years; one-time Board-approved supervisory training within 12 months).

  • Poor recordkeeping (not retaining supervision records for 6 years).
