How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Maryland: A Guide for LCPCs

If you’re a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Maryland looking to supervise Licensed Graduate Professional Counselors (LGPCs), you’ll need to meet specific requirements set by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists. This guide outlines the approved pathways to becoming a clinical supervisor and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support you with the training you need.


🧾Maryland Supervision Requirements for LCPCs

To become a Board-approved clinical supervisor in Maryland, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) must hold an active license in good standing and meet one of the following qualifications outlined in COMAR 10.58.12.06(6):

  1. Complete two years of documented experience providing clinical supervision to counselors.

  2. Earn at least 3 semester credit hours of graduate-level coursework in counseling supervision.

  3. Complete a Board-approved continuing education (CE) program in clinical supervision that includes at least 18 direct clock hours of training with a qualified instructor.

  4. Hold the Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) credential issued by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).

  5. Complete supervision training as defined in COMAR 10.58.12.02B(9)(a) and (b).

🔍 Important Note: As of now, the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists has not publicly defined what qualifies as a “Board-approved” CE program under option (3). We are monitoring for updates to ensure compliance.
