How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Maryland as an LCMFT

How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Maryland as an LCMFT

If you’re a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist (LCMFT) in Maryland, becoming an approved clinical supervisor allows you to mentor the next generation of therapists, expand your professional skills, and strengthen the field. However, Maryland clinical supervisor requirements are specific—missing even one step could mean your supervisee’s hours won’t count toward licensure.

This guide outlines Maryland’s clinical supervisor requirements, license renewal CE requirements for LCMFTs who supervise, pitfalls to avoid, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet supervision-related training needs in Maryland.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

To qualify as an approved clinical supervisor in Maryland, you must meet the following criteria outlined in COMAR 10.58.08.08:

  • Hold a current, unrestricted Maryland license as either a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist (LCMFT) or another approved mental health professional (as defined in Maryland regulations)

  • Have three years of documented experience practicing marriage and family therapy;

  • Complete six semester credit hours (or ten quarter credit hours) of graduate-level study in Theories of Couples and Family Therapy; and

  • Fulfill one of the following:

    • Three graduate semester credit hours (or five quarter credit hours) that include coursework in counseling supervision;

    • A graduate-level course in MFT supervision;

    • Hold the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation;

    • Hold a Supervisor-in-Training or Supervisor Candidate designation through AAMFT;

Additionally, you must maintain a license that has been without disciplinary restrictions for the two years prior to applying.

🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

While Maryland does not require CE hours specifically for maintaining supervisor status, LCMFTs must complete CE every two years to renew their license—and remain eligible to supervise.

To meet these renewal requirements (outlined in COMAR 10.58.05.03), the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors & Therapists requires:

  • 40 hours of continuing education are required every two years (per renewal cycle)

  • At least 30 hours must be in Category A activities — formal, structured learning from a Board-approved sponsor

  • No more than 10 hours may be in Category B activities — informal or self-directed professional development

Maryland does not currently require any additional CE hours specifically for maintaining supervisor status beyond your regular license renewal.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Supervisees Not Being Registered
    Always verify that supervisees are properly registered as LGMFTs with the Maryland Board before starting supervision. Hours completed before registration will not count.

  • Improper Documentation
    Maintain complete and accurate supervision records, including:

    • Signed supervision agreement prior to starting

    • Detailed logs of supervision dates, durations, and topics

    • Periodic written evaluations

  • Not Meeting Requirements at the Time of Supervision
    Supervisors must meet all Board requirements before the first supervision session—not partway through the supervision period.

📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You Meet Maryland CE Requirements

The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers board-aligned CE programs to help you meet Maryland’s general license renewal requirements, including both Category A (formal learning) and Category B (self-study) activities.
