How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Oklahoma as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
Serving as an approved clinical supervisor is one of the most impactful ways Oklahoma Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) can grow professionally while shaping the next generation of therapists. Supervisors provide oversight, mentorship, and accountability—ensuring that clinical training meets professional and ethical standards.
This guide explains the Oklahoma clinical supervisor requirements, the ongoing supervision CE hours you must complete to maintain your status, pitfalls to avoid, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support your professional development.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To qualify as an Approved Supervisor for LMFT Candidates in Oklahoma, you must be formally approved by the Board under OAC 86:15-9-3. You must meet one of the following two paths:
Option 1: AAMFT Approved Supervisor
Hold current recognition as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, and
Be familiar with Oklahoma LMFT laws and rules
Option 2: Oklahoma-Based Path
Be licensed as an LMFT in Oklahoma, and
Have at least two (2) years of post-licensure experience, and
Complete 45 contact hours of supervision training, through either:
A graduate-level course, or
An equivalent course of study approved by the Board, consisting of:
15 hours in a live class or workshop format attended with at least four (4) other supervisors-in-training
30 hours of directed study, approved and monitored by a Board-approved LMFT Supervisor
⚠️ Important: Oklahoma requires that the 45-hour supervision training (including both the 15-hour live component and the 30-hour directed study component) be completed through a Board-approved instructor or course. Applicants should consult the Oklahoma Board of Behavioral Health Licensure’s list of approved supervisor training providers to ensure compliance.
🧑🏫 Caseload Limits
Approved supervisors may oversee up to 12 supervisees at one time.
To supervise more than 12 supervisees, you must submit a petition to the Board and obtain approval on a case-by-case basis.

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
Approved supervisors must complete three hours of continuing education in supervision every year. These CE hours must focus specifically on Oklahoma law and supervision practices, and must be provided by the LMFT License Committee or its designee.
⚠️ Note: The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) does not provide supervision courses specific to Oklahoma law.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Many supervision plans are derailed by avoidable mistakes. Here are some of the most potential pitfalls:
Unregistered supervisees – If a supervisee is not formally registered with the Board, their hours will not count.
Incomplete documentation – Missing signatures, late forms, or poorly kept logs can result in hours being rejected.
Supervisors out of compliance – If a supervisor has not maintained CE requirements or was not fully qualified at the time of supervision, supervisee hours may be invalidated.
Avoiding these issues requires diligence and awareness of the Board’s requirements at all times.
📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You
The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers supervision-focused continuing education designed to strengthen supervisory knowledge, skills, and professional development.
⚠️ Important: TCI is not listed as a Board-approved provider for Oklahoma’s 45-hour LMFT supervisor training requirement. LMFTs seeking Approved Supervisor status must complete their required supervision training through one of the providers approved by the Oklahoma Board of Behavioral Health Licensure.
TCI courses may be appropriate for professional development and general continuing education purposes but do not replace Oklahoma’s Board-approved supervision training requirement.
All continuing education acceptance is determined by the Oklahoma Board of Behavioral Health Licensure. LMFTs are responsible for verifying that any CE course meets current Oklahoma requirements before enrollment.
