How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Oklahoma (LCSW Guide)

How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Oklahoma (LCSW Guide)

If you're a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Oklahoma aiming to supervise candidates for licensure, it's important to understand exactly what the Board requires. This guide covers the official supervision requirements, including eligibility criteria, training expectations, renewal timelines, and where TCI’s continuing education (CE) courses can—and cannot—support your development.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

Under OAC 675:12-1-6, applicants for Board Approved Supervisor status must:

  • Hold the appropriate social work license (same method/specialty as the supervisor status sought).

  • Have at least five (5) years of full-time post-MSW work experience (or equivalent)—and at least three (3) of those years must be full-time experience in the specialty for which supervisor status is sought.

  • Have at least two (2) years of clinical and/or administrative supervisory experience after the MSW (employment supervision or supervising practicum students does not qualify).

  • Submit a supervisor application on current Board forms and provide two letters of reference (one from a same-title licensed social worker addressing supervisory skills).

📘 Supervisor Training Requirement (Board-Sponsored/Approved)

Once you’re approved, you are required to complete Board-sponsored or Board-approved supervisor training:

  • Within 1 year of receiving Board Approved Supervisor status, and

  • At least once every 3 years thereafter to maintain that status.

🔎 Clarification: The Oklahoma Administrative Code does not specify a training length, but the Board has clarified that their supervisor training may be applied as 6 hours of CE toward your 16-hour annual CE requirement (including the 3 required hours in ethics).

Important:
The only supervisor training that meets this requirement is the one provided or approved by the Board itself.
TCI’s courses are not Board-sponsored or approved, and therefore do not satisfy this requirement.

🔄 Ongoing Responsibilities for Supervisors

  • Maintain a current license in good standing and complete Board-sponsored/approved supervisor training on the schedule above.

  • Follow supervision process rules (e.g., submit the supervision contract to the Board before supervision begins; complete periodic written evaluations at 25, 50, and 100 hours; and follow termination reporting timelines). Non-compliance can jeopardize supervision hours.

📘 Continuing Education Requirements

General CE Requirements for All LCSWs: (no supervision-specific CE renewal requirements)

16 CE hours per licensing period, including 3 hours in ethics, are required for license renewal; licenses must be renewed no later than the end of each calendar year.

Oklahoma licenses expire at the end of each calendar year and renew on the first day of the next calendar year.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Starting supervision without an approved contract on file with the Board (hours won’t count).

  • Missing the Board’s training cadence (within one year, then every three years).

  • Incomplete documentation (evaluations at 25/50/100 hours, timely termination forms).

🎓How Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) Can—and Cannot—Help

  • What our courses do not do:
Our courses do not meet the Board-sponsored/approved supervisor-training requirement in 675:12-1-6(b)(2). Please seek that training directly from the Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Social Workers.

  • What our courses can help with:
If you want to strengthen supervision skills (ethics, feedback, multicultural supervision, documentation, etc.), you can use our supervision curriculum for professional development. For application toward general CE, always confirm acceptability with the Board.

Explore supervision skill-building options (not Board-approved supervisor training):

  • 20 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle – Our 20 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle provides comprehensive training in supervision ethics, documentation practices, supervision models, and cultural competency. This self-paced program delivers a full 20 CE hours—exceeding Oklahoma’s general license renewal requirement—and supports ongoing professional development (verify CE acceptability with the Board).

  • Individual Supervision Courses – Targeted topics to deepen competence (for PD; verify CE acceptability with the Board).

  • Free Clinical Supervision Forum – Live discussions and case consults to hone your approach (optional CE available where permitted; verify Oklahoma acceptability).

We’re being explicit to avoid confusion: TCI does not currently offer the Board-sponsored/approved supervisor training that Oklahoma requires every three years.
