How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Utah (LCSW Guide)

Utah’s Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) requires supervisors to:
Hold a qualifying license in good standing — specifically as an LCSW, APRN specializing in psychiatric–mental health nursing, CMHC, marriage and family therapist, psychiatrist, or psychologist.
Have been licensed for at least two years
Be actively engaged in providing clinical mental health therapy
Supervise no more than six individuals at a time (unless granted an exception)
Be certified as a supervisor by the NASW Utah Chapter (NASW-UT) before supervising CSWs
These standards are established in Utah Admin Code R156-60a-305a and apply specifically when supervising Certified Social Workers.

🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
Once approved, you’ll need to meet two CE obligations every renewal cycle to retain your eligibility:
✅ Maintain your LCSW license by completing 40 total CE hours every two years, including:
6 hours in ethics, law, or technology
2 hours in suicide prevention
No more than 15 hours via online self-study

✅ Maintain your supervisor status by completing:
A 4-hour supervisor recertification course through NASW-UT during each renewal cycle
