How to Qualify as a Clinical Supervisor in Kansas (Psychologists)
If you’re a Kansas-licensed psychologist seeking clarity on how to serve as a clinical supervisor in Kansas, this guide covers Kansas clinical supervisor requirements, ongoing CE requirements and pitfalls—plus TCI training options for psychologists.
🧭 How to Qualify as a Clinical Supervisor in Kansas (Psychologists)
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements (Kansas Psychologists)
Kansas does not issue a separate “approved supervisor” credential for psychologists. Instead, the supervisor qualifications are embedded in the psychology regulations at K.A.R. 102-1-5a(d). In plain language, a qualified supervisor must:
Hold the appropriate license/qualification for the supervision provided.
“If providing general training supervision, be a licensed or certified provider of a health-related service… or have attained the appropriate degree or training in the topic area in which supervision is provided.”For predoctoral internship supervision:
“Be licensed at the doctoral level in psychology.”
For postdoctoral supervision:
“Have at least two years of experience that includes the clinical practice of psychology after the date of licensure at the doctoral level in psychology.”
- Have authority and a clear role in the setting:
Meet one of the following:- (i) be a staff member/understand the setting’s policies and organization; or
- (ii) be vested with authority over the supervisee’s professional contacts (focused on the supervisee’s skills and client welfare).
Avoid conflicts and disciplinary sanctions:
No familial or harmful dual relationships; not be under sanction unless waived by the Board.Use Board forms and submit detailed documentation that enables the Board to evaluate the supervisee’s experience.
Supervision Responsibilities
Predoctoral settings: provide 1 hour of individual clinical supervision for every 10 hours of direct client contact.
Postdoctoral settings: provide 1 hour of individual clinical supervision for every 20 hours of direct client contact.
Face-to-face supervision: provide individual in-person; when not practical due to emergency, geographic distance, or other exigent circumstances, interactive video/electronic/telephonic supervision is allowed but may not exceed one out of every four supervisory sessions and must protect confidentiality.
Conduct supervision distinct from personal therapy/didactic instruction/consultation
Ensure clients are informed the supervisee is practicing under supervision; Be available at decision points regarding diagnosis & treatment
Maintain documentation of services and supervisee competence

🔁 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements (Psychologists)
No supervision-specific CE: Kansas does not require separate, supervision-specific CE to maintain “supervisor status” for psychologists. Supervisors must, however, meet the general CE requirements for psychologist license renewal under K.A.R. 102-1-15. Continuing education:
50 continuing education hours every two years (prorated for shorter periods)
At least 3 hours in professional ethics
At least 6 hours related to the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid as a Supervisor in Kansas
Using an ineligible supervisor
Ensure your internship/postdoc supervisors meet the exact role-based requirements (doctoral-level license for predoc; 2+ years post-licensure clinical practice for postdoc). Keep documentation current.Supervision hours not counting
Missing the 1:10 (predoc) / 1:20 (postdoc) ratios, or over-reliance on televideo (more than 1 in 4 sessions) can jeopardize credit. Track and verify every session.Insufficient documentation or wrong forms
Supervisors must use Board forms and provide detail sufficient for the Board to evaluate experience quality and extent. Don’t wait until the end—document throughout.Assuming supervisee “registration” is required
Kansas does not require separate Board “registration” of psychology interns/postdocs for supervision credit. Follow the 102-1-5a supervision framework and your setting’s requirements.
📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You Meet Supervision CE Requirements
Quick note: Kansas does not require supervision-specific CE to maintain “supervisor status” for psychologists. Instead, you must meet the general CE requirements for psychology license renewal (see 102-1-15. Continuing education). TCI provides continuing education courses to strengthen your supervision skills while you earn renewal CE.
🎓 Clinical Supervision Certificate Program (49 CE)
A comprehensive, skills-based pathway covering supervision ethics, documentation, supervision models, multicultural supervision, telesupervision, evaluation and advanced supervisory techniques.
Apply these hours toward Kansas’s 50-hour biennial CE requirement (you’ll still need an additional hour and any content not included in the program).
Transparent note: The CSC does not include training specifically on diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders—you’ll add that separately.

🧠 Meet the “Diagnosis & Treatment” CE Content (12 CE)
To satisfy the 6 hours related to the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders required each renewal cycle, consider:
Assessment and Diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR Framework — a 12-CE course that exceeds the 6-hour diagnosis/treatment content minimum.
Pair this with the CSC to round out your 50 total CE hours.
