How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Arizona as a Licensed Psychologist
Serving as a clinical supervisor is an excellent way for licensed psychologists (LPs) in Arizona to advance their careers and strengthen the profession. This guide outlines how to serve as a supervisor in Arizona, including Arizona clinical supervisor requirements, continuing education (CE) obligations, and pitfalls to avoid. We’ll also show how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support you with high-quality supervision training and CE resources.
📜 Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
In Arizona, not every licensed psychologist is automatically qualified to supervise—you must meet specific criteria set by the Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners. According to Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S.) § 32-2071, a clinical supervisor must be a psychologist licensed at the independent level and have sufficient experience and competence:
Licensure: Must hold an independent-level psychologist license in any U.S. state or Canadian province, or be an active-duty military psychologist licensed in a U.S. jurisdiction. A.R.S. § 32-2071(G)(1)
Experience: Must have held an independent psychologist license for at least two years before supervising postdoctoral hours.
Competence: Must be clinically competent in the supervision area as demonstrated by education, training, or experience.
Responsibility: Accept full legal responsibility for supervisee’s clients, including their diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. [A.R.S. § 32-2071(G)(2)]
Availability: Must be available for emergencies and provide emergency coverage if unavailable. [A.R.S. § 32-2071(G)(4)]
Supervision Format: Must provide at least one hour of in-person or secure video supervision for every 20 hours of supervised experience. [A.R.S. § 32-2071(G)(5)]
Internship Requirements: For pre-internship or internship supervision, 75% of supervision must be by independently licensed psychologists. [A.R.S. § 32-2071(E)(4)(d)]
Documentation: Must maintain records of supervised hours, client contact, supervision plans, evaluations, and credentials. [A.R.S. § 32-2071(G)(3), (G)(7)]
🔄 Ongoing/Renewal Continuing Education Requirements
Arizona does not require supervision-specific CE to maintain supervisor status. However, licensed psychologists must meet general license renewal requirements.
Under A.A.C. R4-26-207, psychologists must complete:
- 40 continuing education (CE) hours during each license period
- At least 4 hours in professional ethics
🔹 Jurisprudence Education Tool (JET)
The Arizona Board has implemented a new 4-hour online Jurisprudence Education Tool (JET) requirement.
The first group required to complete the JET are psychologists with renewal deadlines beginning February 28, 2026. The Board is currently limiting access to eligible renewal applicants and will notify licensees prior to their renewal deadline.
Licensees should monitor the Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners website for current implementation details.
Note: TCI does not provide the Arizona Board’s required Jurisprudence Education Tool.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Improper Documentation: Missing or incorrect logs, lack of evaluations, or improperly submitted verification forms can invalidate hours.
Unqualified Supervisors: If a supervisor does not meet the experience or licensure requirements at the time of supervision, the hours will be disqualified.

⚠️ Arizona-Specific Note (JET Requirement):
Arizona requires completion of the Board’s 4-hour Jurisprudence Education Tool (JET) as part of continuing education requirements. JET is administered by the Arizona Board and is Arizona-specific. TCI does not provide the JET, so even if you complete CE hours through TCI, you may still need to complete the Board’s JET separately (when applicable to your renewal cycle).
