How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Hawaii as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
If you're a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Hawaii, stepping into a clinical supervisor role allows you to mentor new professionals, expand your leadership skills, and strengthen the field. But before you begin, it’s crucial to understand the Hawaii clinical supervisor requirements—as missing even one detail could disqualify your supervisee’s hours.
This guide walks you through how to serve as a supervisor in Hawaii, including eligibility criteria, continuing education (CE) requirements, pitfalls to avoid, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet your supervision CE training needs.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
Who Qualifies Under State Board Rules?
To supervise a Marriage and Family Therapy candidate in Hawaii, the supervisor must meet the criteria defined in Hawaii Revised Statutes §451J-1, as follows:
A licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
Must have held a license in good standing in any U.S. state
Must have been licensed for at least two years preceding and during the supervision period
OR
A licensed mental health professional (e.g., LCSW, LPC, psychologist, etc.)
Must have a license in good standing in any U.S. state
Must have been a Clinical Member in good standing of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) for at least two years preceding and during the supervision period
🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
There are no> separate continuing education (CE) requirements for supervisors in Hawaii at this time. However, all MFT licensees must complete the following to renew their license, as required by Hawaii Revised Statutes §451J-10(b)(2)
45 CE credit hours every three years
At least 6 of those hours must be in ethics
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Even experienced clinicians can make costly mistakes when it comes to supervision. Be sure to avoid these errors:
1. Supervising Unregistered Interns or Trainees
Verify that your supervisee is actively registered and working toward licensure in accordance with Hawaii law. Unregistered or improperly registered supervisees may not receive credit for their hours.2. Incomplete or Improper Documentation
Use the correct board-approved forms and clearly document supervision dates, hours, and activities. Inaccurate or incomplete records can lead to hours being denied during the licensure review process.3. Supervisor Not Meeting State Requirements
You must meet Hawaii's supervisor qualifications at the time the supervision occurs. Even if you're licensed elsewhere or have extensive experience, you cannot supervise unless you meet Hawaii’s specific criteria.
