How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Indiana as an LCSW
If you're a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Indiana and want to support new clinicians on their path to licensure, serving as a clinical supervisor is an excellent way to contribute to the profession while strengthening your own practice. This guide explains Indiana’s clinical supervisor requirements—including eligibility, CE expectations, pitfalls, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support your supervision training needs.
📋 Requirements to Provide Clinical Supervision in Indiana
Indiana does not have an approval, certification, or registration process for LCSW supervisors.
However, if you supervise someone seeking LCSW licensure, you must follow the requirements outlined in State Form I (Indiana Professional Licensing Agency):
✅ Hold an active Indiana LCSW license throughout the supervision period
✅ Supervise for at least four (4) hours of face-to-face contact per month during the required 24-month supervised experience
✅ Optionally, you may provide up to 50% of the required hours via synchronous virtual supervision (interactive audio–visual, HIPAA-compliant) as per recent guidance
🎓 Initial Training or CE Requirements
Indiana does not require any specific CE or training to begin supervising. Still, completing quality supervision education is highly recommended to:
Ensure you provide effective, ethical oversight
Prevent errors in documentation, scheduling, or record-keeping
Strengthen your supervisory skills and confidence
While there’s no mandatory CE, it’s smart to prepare proactively.
🔁 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements
Indiana does not require supervision-specific CE hours to maintain supervisor status.
However, you must keep your LCSW license active—and this does require CE.
✔️ Indiana LCSW Renewal Requirements (per 839 IAC 1-6-3):
40 CEUs every 2-year renewal period
(20 CEUs per year, April 1–March 31 renewal cycle)At least 10 Category I CEUs per year
At least 1 Category I Ethics CEU per year
CE must be obtained within the renewal period (no carryover)
CE must be retained for 4 years after the renewal period
Supervisors who fail to maintain their LCSW license cannot legally continue supervision, and supervisee hours during a lapse may be invalid.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Stay vigilant to these mistakes that could jeopardize your supervisees:
Supervisee Not Yet in Licensure Process: Ensure your supervisee is actively pursuing LCSW licensure and that supervision hours comply with Indiana Board documentation and timing requirements.
Insufficient face-to-face hours – Indiana requires at least 4 hours/month.
