How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in North Dakota as a Licensed Psychologist

Serving as a clinical supervisor in North Dakota is a rewarding way for licensed psychologists (LPs) to mentor new professionals and shape the future of the field. This guide explains how to serve as a supervisor in North Dakota, detailing the North Dakota clinical supervisor requirements for psychologists – from eligibility criteria and supervision training to continuing education (CE) obligations and pitfalls.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

To serve as a clinical supervisor for a psychology resident in North Dakota, you must meet state board eligibility requirements outlined in North Dakota Administrative Code (NDAC) § 66-02-01-11.1(b)(10):

  • Active Licensed Psychologist: You must be a licensed psychologist in good standing, licensed in the jurisdiction where the supervision takes place.
  • Minimum 3 Years of Licensure: You must have been licensed for at least three years to serve as a primary supervisor.
  • Primary Supervisor’s Role – Availability and Responsibility: Supervisors must be clearly available and professionally responsible for the trainee’s clients and ensure the quality and structure of the training experience.

Note: North Dakota does not require a separate application or board approval to serve as a clinical supervisor. However, you must meet all the qualifications and maintain compliance with CE and licensing requirements.

📋 Expectations When Supervising a Psychology Resident

While not required to qualify as a supervisor, these standards must be met for the resident's supervised experience to count toward licensure (NDAC § 66-02-01-11.1(b)):

  • Provide at least 100 hours of supervision, with 50 hours one-on-one
  • Serve as the primary supervisor for at least 50% of all supervision hours
  • Conduct weekly face-to-face supervision (in person or secure video) (§ 66-02-01-11.1(b)(12))
  • For predoctoral residents, maintain documented coordination with the resident’s doctoral program (§ 66-02-01-11.1(b)(15))

🔁 Ongoing / Renewal Continuing Education Requirements

To maintain licensure and eligibility to supervise, psychologists must meet these biennial CE requirements (NDAC § 66-03-01-04):

  • 40 Hours of CE every 2 years: Including at least 3 hours in ethics, law, or jurisprudence (any one or a mix satisfies the rule).
  • Supervision-Specific CE (for supervisors): If you supervise psychology residents, complete at least 3 CE hours in supervision each cycle (counts toward the 40).
  • CE Format Limits: No more than 20 hours may be completed via recorded/asynchronous online courses or self-study formats. The remaining hours must be interactive.
  • Reporting & Documentation: CE documentation must be maintained and submitted to the Board during renewal.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

Avoid these frequent supervision-related mistakes:

  • Supervisees Not Being Registered: Supervisees must be registered as "psychology residents" with the Board before supervision begins. Unregistered supervision hours may not count.
  • Improper Documentation: Inadequate tracking of supervision hours, formats, or activities can invalidate hours.
  • Supervisor Ineligibility: Supervisors must meet all requirements at the time supervision is provided, including licensure duration and CE obligations.
