How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Oklahoma as a Licensed Psychologist
If you're a licensed psychologist in Oklahoma looking to expand your role by supervising a licensure candidate, it's crucial to understand the Oklahoma clinical supervisor requirements. In this guide, we'll break down how to serve as a supervisor in Oklahoma – including eligibility rules, continuing education (CE) obligations, pitfalls, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support your journey with training and resources.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To supervise a psychologist working toward licensure in Oklahoma (including those pursuing health service provider certification or independent practice), you must meet all the following requirements as set by the state board in OAC § 575:10-1-3(h) :
🔹 1. Licensed as a Psychologist for At Least 2 Years: You must hold an active Oklahoma psychologist license for a minimum of two years and be in good standing.
🔹 2. Same Area of Doctoral Training: You must be trained in the same major program of doctoral study as your supervisee. Your specialty should match the supervisee’s training, and you should only supervise work that falls within that area.
🔹 3. Active Practice (10 Hours/Week Minimum): You need to be actively engaged in providing psychological services to the public in a private practice setting for at least 10 hours per week.
🔹 4. No Dual or Conflicting Relationships: You cannot supervise someone with whom you have a relationship that would impair objectivity. This includes spouses, children, siblings, parents, or anyone with whom you have a romantic or sexual relationship.
🔹 5. Acceptance of Professional Responsibility: You must formally agree to take full legal and ethical responsibility for all services provided by the supervisee.
🔹 6. Supervising No More Than 3 Candidates: Oklahoma limits each psychologist to supervising up to three licensure candidates at a time, unless given explicit Board approval for more.
🔎 What You Don’t Need to Qualify as a Supervisor: Oklahoma does not require any special supervisor certification, separate license, or supervision-specific coursework. As long as you meet the criteria above, you're eligible to supervise.
🔄 Ongoing/Renewal Continuing Education Requirements
Supervising a licensure candidate in Oklahoma does not impose any additional continuing education (CE) requirements. However, you must still meet the standard CE obligations (OAC § 575:10-1-8(a)) for renewing your psychologist license:
- Complete 20 CE hours per calendar year
- At least 3 hours in ethics, legal issues, or professional practice standards (for Health Service Psychologists)
- Submit CE hours by December 31 each year
- Retain CE documentation for 2 years
There are no Oklahoma LP supervision CE requirements beyond these standard expectations. More information on Oklahoma’s CE expectations can be found on the OK Board of Examiners of Psychologists website.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Supervisee Not Board-Approved: Supervisees must be officially approved by the Board before they begin accruing supervision hours. Hours completed prior to approval may not count.
Incomplete Documentation: Supervisors must maintain clear documentation, including a written supervision agreement and logs of weekly sessions.
Supervisor Not Meeting Requirements: Supervisors must maintain their eligibility throughout the supervision period. Letting a license lapse or falling below the practice hour requirement can invalidate supervision.
Mismatched Practice Areas: Supervision must occur within the scope of the supervisor’s training and practice area.
