How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in South Carolina (LCSW Guide)

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in South Carolina (LCSW Guide)

If you're a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in South Carolina exploring how to supervise, you're in the right place. This guide breaks down South Carolina supervisor eligibility, supervision CE, and state-specific training expectations—so you can start supervising with clarity and confidence

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

To serve as a supervisor in South Carolina, you must meet all of the following:

  • Be a Licensed Independent Social Worker—Clinical Practice (LISW-CP) or Advanced Practice (LISW-AP).

  • Have a minimum of 4,500 hours of clinical (for LISW-CP) or advanced (for LISW-AP) practice earned over a period of not less than 3 years beyond receipt of the LISW-CP/AP.

  • Have obtained 45 academic coursework hours or 45 continuing-education hours in supervision.

Note: The FAQ does not indicate a separate supervisor application or registration with the Board. However, the South Carolina Code of Laws: SECTION 40-63-240(C)(2) requires all LISW-CP and LISW-AP supervisors to successfully pass a board-prescribed supervision examination in addition to meeting experience and training criteria. Once all requirements are met, you are eligible to provide supervision.

🔄 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in South Carolina must complete 40 continuing education (CE) hours every two years to renew their license. This is a general CE requirement that applies to all LCSWs, regardless of whether they provide supervision.
There is no additional or ongoing supervision-specific CE requirement beyond the initial 45-hour supervision training needed to qualify as a clinical supervisor.
That said, it's considered best practice—and is strongly encouraged—to continue pursuing CE in supervision topics to stay up to date with evolving standards, ethics, and supervisory strategies.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

Serving as a supervisor is a professional milestone—but small oversights can derail a supervisee’s licensing progress. Watch out for these issues:

  • Improper documentation: Failing to track supervision accurately—dates, content, duration—can result in hours being rejected.

  • Supervisor not meeting qualifications: If you don’t meet the exact state requirements at the time of supervision, the hours may be invalid, even if you qualify later.

When in doubt, double-check with the South Carolina Board to ensure compliance.
