How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in West Virginia (LCSW Guide)

If you're a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in West Virginia ready to take the next step in your career by serving as a clinical supervisor, it's essential to understand the current requirements set by the West Virginia Board of Social Work. This guide walks you through the eligibility rules, CE training mandates, and pitfalls to avoid—so you can supervise with confidence.

🧑‍⚖️ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

To qualify as a clinical supervisor in West Virginia, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in good standing.
    Source: §25-1-3.6.1

  • Hold sufficient clinical expertise to assist a less advanced practitioner in forming a professional identity and developing the necessary skills for independent practice.
    Source: §25-1-2.2

  • Have two years of post-clinical licensure experience (per current rules).
    Source: §25-1-3.6.1(a)

  • Complete a minimum of 6 hours of Board-approved clinical supervision training on supervisory practices and methods relevant to clinical social work.
This requirement applies to all new clinical supervisors.
Exemption: Individuals who have actively provided clinical supervision within two years of the effective date of this rule are not required to complete the pre-service training.

  • Submit a clinical supervision application and contract to the Board for approval before supervision begins. The contract must clearly identify the supervisor and supervisee and outline their roles.

  • Supervisors must not have dual relationships with supervisees, such as those involving family, cohabitation, or prior therapeutic contact, as these may impair objectivity or cause harm.

🔄 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements

Currently, there is no supervision-specific CE requirement to maintain clinical supervisor status in West Virginia. However, all LCSWs—including those who supervise—must fulfill the state's general CE requirements to maintain licensure:

✅ General CE Requirements for LCSWs and LICSWs (Regular Licensees) According to the West Virginia Board of Social Work:

  • 30 total CE hours every two years

  • At least 20 hours must be from Board-approved providers (Category I)

    • 10 of these hours must be synchronous/live (in person or via live webinar)

    • Up to 10 hours may be asynchronous/self-paced online

    • 2 hours must focus on mental health conditions specific to veterans and their families

  • 1 hour must cover Social Work Ethics (can be live, online, or independent study)

  • Up to 10 hours may be completed through independent professional activities (Category II), such as research, reading, or preparing professional presentations

All CE activities must relate to social work practice and be appropriately documented for renewal or audit.
📘 Note: While supervision-specific CE is not mandatory for renewal, many LCSWs choose to pursue advanced supervision training to maintain competence and align with best practices.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

Many supervision candidates and supervisors in West Virginia unintentionally make errors that invalidate supervision hours. Be aware of the following:

  • Supervisees must have a pre-approved supervision contract in place before counting hours

  • Supervision must meet Board definitions and be documented accurately

  • Supervision provided by an unqualified or unapproved supervisor may not be accepted
