Description

An every-other-month continuing education series -- a free forum for clinical supervisors to learn, network, and share historical and innovative practices in clinical supervision for mental health professionals. The focus will include a combination of theory and practice. Each month an expert supervisor will facilitate a lecture and discussion. Guest presenters will include allied professionals representing counseling, clinical social work, marriage and family therapy, and psychology. Continuing Education credits will be offered for behavioral health clinicians.

• September 11, 2026 - Supporting Supervisee Growth from Novice to Expert, presented by Ashley Charbonneau, LCSW, LAC, ACS

Clinical supervision plays a critical role in shaping the development of emerging therapists, yet it is often limited to a focus on skill acquisition and theoretical orientation. This presentation reframes supervision as an intentional, developmental process designed to support supervisee growth from novice to more advanced levels of practice. Participants will explore common gaps in graduate training that can leave supervisees underprepared for the realities of clinical work, including challenges related to professional boundaries, role clarity, and translating conceptual knowledge into practice with clients. We will highlight how these gaps can impact supervisees’ confidence, decision-making, and professional identity. Emphasis will be placed on practical, developmentally appropriate supervision strategies that promote growth across stages of competency.

January 16, 2026, with Interdisciplinary Supervision: Understanding the Historical Threads that Connect the Helping Professions with DaLene Forester

1. Discuss the historical origins and central commitments of counseling, social work, psychology, and marriage & family therapy and how these histories shape supervision priorities.
2. Apply a cross-disciplinary supervision checklist to their own supervision circumstance or situation to enhance their personal understanding of their supervises.
3. Demonstrate two supervisory prompts to operationalize cultural humility toward disciplinary identity that increase supervisee disclosure and collaborative learning.

March 13, 2026, with Supervising for Sustainability: Supervision to Support Emerging Clinicians with Amie Bryant

1. Describe supervision for sustainability and explain why it is essential in supporting emerging clinicians doing trauma-exposed work.
2. Identify common signs of trauma exposure response in emerging clinicians and explore how supervision can be used to address them.
3. Apply supervisory strategies that support resilience, meaning-making, and long-term engagement in the profession.

May 15, 2026, with A Primer on Deliberate Practice Supervision with Jason Brand

1. Describe the core principles of deliberate practice and how they apply to therapist learning and supervision, including the role of feedback, repetition, and focused learning goals.
2. Differentiate between traditional supervision approaches and deliberate practice–informed methods, particularly the distinction between conceptual understanding and procedural skill development.
3. Identify supervisory moments where supervisees become stuck and select targeted strategies—including video review and behavioral rehearsal—to support clinical skill growth.

July 10, 2026, with The Skill of Self-Disclosure in Supervision with Khara Croswaite Brindle

1. Assess the risks and benefits of self-disclosure as a supervisory tool.
2. Identify the risks and benefits of self-disclosure within the clinical supervision relationship.
3. Apply a self-disclosure framework to encourage the appropriate use of this tool by both supervisors and supervisees.
