Nebraska CEU Requirements

Licensed Mental Health Practitioners (LMHP), Certified Professional Counselors (CPC), and Certified Marriage and Family Therapists (CMFT) in Nebraska must renew their licenses on a biennial cycle, with the expiration and renewal deadline falling on September 1 of every even-numbered year. All licensees are required to complete 32 hours of continuing education (CE) during each two-year renewal period, including a mandatory 4 hours in ethics. Additionally, individuals who hold a Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner (LIMHP) credential must also complete 6 CE hours in the diagnosis and treatment of major mental disorders.

If you are not an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, Nebraska requires you to complete a one-time, five-hour supervision training course approved by AAMFT or an organization with substantially similar standards. This training must be completed before you begin supervising MFT candidates (172 NAC 94 § 008.01(B)).

To remain eligible to supervise—and maintain your license—Nebraska requires all license and certificate holders to complete the following during each 24-month renewal period (172 NAC 94 § 012.01):

• 32 hours of continuing education related to mental health practice
• At least 4 hours must be in ethics

Certified Master Social Workers (CMSW) in Nebraska must renew their certification on a two-year cycle, with the renewal deadline falling on September 1 of even-numbered years. Each renewal period requires completion of 32 hours of continuing education (CE), including a mandatory 4 hours in ethics applicable to all certificate holders. CMSWs who also hold a LIMHP credential must complete an additional 6 hours specifically in the diagnosis and treatment of major mental disorders.

Nebraska does not require supervision-specific continuing education to begin supervising or to maintain your status as a clinical supervisor. However, 172 NAC 94-012 states that to keep your license active and remain eligible to supervise, all licensees (including LCSWs) must complete at least 32 CE hours every two years, including:

• At least 4 CE hours in ethics
• At least 6 CE hours related to the diagnosis and treatment of major mental disorders
• Up to 6 CE hours can be earned by providing supervision to provisionally licensed professionals

While completing supervision-focused continuing education is not required, it is strongly encouraged to ensure that you become or stay familiar with best practices, models, ethics, and risk management. Supervisors are expected to provide high-quality, ethical oversight that aligns with Nebraska’s definition of clinical supervision.

Licensed Psychologists in Nebraska are required to renew their licenses on a biennial cycle, with the renewal deadline based on the license expiration date and occurring every two years. During each 24-month renewal period, psychologists must complete a minimum of 24 continuing education (CE) hours, of which at least 3 hours must focus on ethics specifically related to the practice of psychology.

Nebraska does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) for psychologists to serve as clinical supervisors. To remain eligible to supervise, psychologists must simply maintain an active Nebraska psychologist license by meeting the state’s general CE and renewal requirements. Under 172 NAC 155-014.01, psychologists must complete 24 hours of approved continuing education during each two-year renewal period, including at least 3 hours in ethics. Licenses renew on a biennial cycle (expiring January 1 of odd-numbered years). As long as these standard CE obligations are met and the license remains current and unrestricted, Nebraska imposes no additional CE or training hours specifically for supervising.
