Nebraska Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists Renewal Information
Licensed Mental Health Practitioners (LMHP), Certified Professional Counselors (CPC), and Certified Marriage and Family Therapists (CMFT) in Nebraska must renew their licenses on a biennial cycle, with the expiration and renewal deadline falling on September 1 of every even-numbered year. All licensees are required to complete 32 hours of continuing education (CE) during each two-year renewal period, including a mandatory 4 hours in ethics. Additionally, individuals who hold a Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner (LIMHP) credential must also complete 6 CE hours in the diagnosis and treatment of major mental disorders.
CE Requirements to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor(MFT-S)
If you are not an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, Nebraska requires you to complete a one-time, five-hour supervision training course approved by AAMFT or an organization with substantially similar standards. This training must be completed before you begin supervising MFT candidates (172 NAC 94 § 008.01(B)).
To remain eligible to supervise—and maintain your license—Nebraska requires all license and certificate holders to complete the following during each 24-month renewal period (172 NAC 94 § 012.01):
- 32 hours of continuing education related to mental health practice
- At least 4 hours must be in ethics
The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers flexible, self-paced CE options that help meet Nebraska’s initial and ongoing requirements:
