Pennsylvania CEU Requirements

In Pennsylvania, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Marriage & Family Therapists (MFTs) must renew their licenses every two years, with the renewal deadline falling on February 28 of each odd-numbered year. Each renewal cycle requires 30 total hours of continuing education (CE). Within those hours, professionals must complete 3 hours in professional ethics, 2 hours in child abuse recognition and reporting from a Board-approved provider, and 1 hour in suicide prevention.

While there are no continuing education (CE) requirements specifically for supervisors in Pennsylvania, you must still meet the standard CE requirements to keep your MFT license active — and remain eligible to supervise.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) in Pennsylvania are required to complete 30 total CE hours every two years as part of the biennial renewal cycle. Within these 30 hours, 49 Pa. Code § 48.32 mandates:

• At least 1 hour in suicide prevention (required by Act 74 of 2016)
• At least 2 hours in child abuse recognition and reporting, completed through an approved provider that submits verification electronically (pursuant to § 48.58, as required by Act 31 of 2014)
• At least 3 hours in professional ethics

The Act 31 child abuse training must be completed through a provider approved directly by the Pennsylvania Department of State and reported directly to the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs (BPOA).

Each renewal cycle mandates 30 total hours of continuing education (CE). Within these hours, LCSWs must complete 3 hours in professional ethics, 2 hours in child abuse recognition and reporting through a Board-approved provider, and 1 hour in suicide prevention.

In Pennsylvania, there are no supervision-specific CE requirements to become or remain a clinical supervisor. However, to qualify as a supervisor and maintain that role, Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) must hold an active, unrestricted license in good standing—and meet the state’s general CE obligations for license renewal.

LCSWs in Pennsylvania must complete 30 clock hours of continuing education every two years, including 3 hours in ethics and 2 hours in child abuse recognition and reporting. These CE hours may include supervision-related content.

The Act 31 child abuse training must be completed through a provider approved directly by the Pennsylvania Department of State and reported directly to the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs (BPOA).

Remember: To serve as a supervisor, you must meet the eligibility and conduct standards in Pennsylvania Code §§ 47.1a and 47.12d, and maintain an active LCSW license by completing the full CE requirement every two years—including the 2-hour Act 31 child abuse training from an approved provider.

Each renewal period requires completion of 30 hours of continuing education (CE), including 3 hours in ethics, 2 hours in child abuse recognition and reporting from an approved provider (submitted electronically), and 1 hour in suicide prevention. Of the 30 hours, a maximum of 15 hours may be completed via home study through approved sponsors.

Pennsylvania imposes both an initial supervision training requirement for primary supervisors and ongoing continuing education (CE) requirements to maintain licensure eligibility. Under 49 Pa. Code § 41.33, a psychologist serving as a primary supervisor must have completed either a doctoral-level supervision course or at least 3 hours of Board-acceptable continuing education in supervision. This supervision-specific CE is a one-time, initial requirement and is not required to be repeated each renewal cycle.

In addition to the initial supervision requirement, all licensed psychologists must meet Pennsylvania’s general CE requirements for license renewal under 49 Pa. Code § 41.59. Psychologists are required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every biennium, with the renewal cycle running from December 1 of an odd-numbered year through November 30 of the next odd-numbered year. Within the 30 required hours, psychologists must complete 3 hours in ethics and 2 hours in child abuse recognition and reporting through a state-approved course (49 Pa. Code § 41.77; Act 31 of 2014). Up to 15 hours may be completed via home study, with the remaining hours earned through live or interactive formats. Up to 10 CE hours may be carried over to the next biennium, excluding ethics and child-abuse coursework.

To support psychologists in meeting both the initial supervision CE requirement and ongoing license renewal obligations, the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers APA-approved continuing education applicable to Pennsylvania licensure. Individual Clinical Supervision CE Courses may be used to satisfy the initial 3-hour supervision CE requirement for primary supervisors. Additional options include the Clinical Supervision Certificate Program, which provides comprehensive training in supervision ethics, evaluation, documentation, cultural competence, and risk management (hours may be applied toward the 30-hour renewal requirement subject to Pennsylvania’s 15-hour home-study limit), the 20 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle (from which up to 15 hours may be applied per biennium), and Live Interactive Webinars are also available to help psychologists meet the required live-CE balance. Pennsylvania also requires 2 hours of training on child abuse recognition and reporting as part of the continuing education requirements for psychologists under 49 Pa. Code § 41.59(b) and Act 31 of 2014. This training must be completed through a Pennsylvania state-approved provider.

The Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology accepts courses from any provider who is approved by the American Psychological Association.
