South Carolina CEU Requirements

In South Carolina, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Marriage & Family Therapists (MFTs) must renew their licenses every two years, with the renewal deadline set by the South Carolina Board of Examiners. Each single-license professional is required to complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) per renewal cycle, including 34 hours specific to the license and 6 hours in ethics. For professionals holding multiple licenses, the requirement increases to 50 total CE hours, with 44 in professional practice—divided equally between licenses—and 6 in ethics.

To maintain your status as a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPCS) in South Carolina, you must complete 10 hours of formal continuing education (CE) in supervision during each two-year licensure renewal period. These hours must be specifically focused on the practice of supervision and are in addition to the CE hours required for LPC license renewal. To become and remain an LMFT-S (Licensed Marriage & Family Therapy Supervisor) in South Carolina, you must meet both initial qualification requirements under S.C. Code Regs. § 36-09 and renewal requirements under § 36-16.

If you do not hold a doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or in a CACREP-accredited marriage, couple, and family counseling specialty, you must complete:

• Three (3) semester hours of graduate-level coursework in clinical supervision; or
• An equivalent Board-approved supervision training program

This training must cover foundational supervision competencies, including supervision models, ethics, multicultural issues, evaluation, and telesupervision.

Under South Carolina Code of Regulations § 36-16, individuals licensed as Marriage and Family Therapy Supervisors (LMFT-S) must satisfy both of the following requirements during every two-year licensure period:

1️⃣ LMFT License Renewal Requirements

To renew the underlying LMFT license, licensees must complete:

Forty (40) hours of Board-approved continuing education every two years, including:

• Thirty-three (33) hours related to the MFT license
• Six (6) hours in ethics related to the professional license
• One (1) hour in suicide assessment, treatment, and management

Licensees holding more than one professional license must complete fifty (50) total hours, with:

• Six (6) hours in ethics
• One (1) hour in suicide assessment, treatment, and management
• The remaining hours divided as equally as possible among the licensed disciplines

2️⃣ Supervisor License Renewal Requirement

In addition to the above LMFT renewal requirements, LMFT-S must complete:

Ten (10) hours of continuing education in supervision of their discipline during every two-year licensure period as a condition of renewal of the supervisor license.

South Carolina requires:

Licensed Social Workers (LSWs) in South Carolina must renew their licenses every two years, with the renewal period running from January 1 to December 31 of each biennial cycle. To maintain licensure, social workers must complete a minimum of 40 clock hours of continuing education (CE) during each renewal period. Of these, at least 20 hours must be provided by a trained social worker holding a BSW, MSW, or doctorate in social work.

South Carolina does not require ongoing supervision-specific CE hours beyond the initial training. However, to initially qualify as a clinical supervisor, LISW-CPs and LISW-APs must complete 45 hours of academic coursework or continuing education in supervision, as outlined in South Carolina Code § 40-63-240(A)(5) and § 40-63-240(C)(4).

To maintain your license—and remain eligible to supervise—you must also complete 40 CE hours every two years, which is the general renewal requirement for all licensees. While supervision-focused CE is not required after the initial 45 hours, it remains best practice to continue building supervisory skills.

Licensed psychologists in South Carolina must complete 24 continuing education (CE) credits every two years to maintain active licensure, according to the South Carolina Board of Examiners in Psychology. Of these, a minimum of 12 credits must come from Category A activities, which include formal learning experiences like workshops, seminars, and webinars with direct contact hours. The remaining 12 credits may come from Category B sources, such as self-directed study, though psychologists may choose to fulfill all 24 credits through Category A.

South Carolina does not impose separate, supervision-specific continuing education (CE) requirements for psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors. However, all licensed psychologists — including those who supervise — must meet the general CE requirements for license renewal under South Carolina Code of Regulations, Chapter 100 Regulation 100-10. Licensed psychologists in South Carolina are required to complete 24 approved CE credits every two-year renewal cycle. Of the 24 required hours, at least 12 hours must be earned from Category A activities, which include APA-approved programs, graduate-level coursework, and formal teaching, while up to 12 hours may be earned from Category B activities, such as peer supervision, professional consultation, and certain professional meetings. CE hours may not be carried over to a subsequent renewal cycle. Psychologists must attest to CE completion at renewal and retain documentation in case of Board audit.
