Wisconsin CEU Requirements

In Wisconsin, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, beginning in their first full biennium after initial licensure. Of these, 4 hours must be in ethics and professional boundaries related to the licensee’s area of practice.

Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6693. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

In Wisconsin, Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, beginning with the first full biennium after initial licensure. Newly licensed MFTs are exempt from CE during their first license renewal. To become credentialed as an ICS, you must:

• Meet one of the supervision education pathways under SPS 161.05(5):
  • Hold an active Intermediate Clinical Supervisor credential;
  • OR complete 30 hours of education in clinical supervision, including at least 6 hours in each required domain (assessment and evaluation, counselor development, management and administration, and professional responsibility);
  • OR hold an American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Supervisor certification.
• Successfully pass the National Clinical Supervisor Examination (NCSE) administered by NAADAC.

🔎 Important Clarification:
The Independent Clinical Supervisor (ICS) credential described above is governed by SPS 161 and applies in specific supervisory contexts under DSPS. Supervision of individuals seeking LCSW licensure under Wis. Stat. § 457.08(4)(c) follows separate statutory criteria, and obtaining the ICS credential may not be required in all supervision settings.

Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

Once approved, your Independent Clinical Supervisor credential must be renewed every two years (biennium: March 1 of an odd year through February 28 of the following odd year).

To maintain your credential, you must complete:

Licensees are responsible for ensuring that selected coursework satisfies the domain requirements and the renewal requirements. The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) does not pre-approve continuing education providers.

Telehealth Certification Institute LLC, #1609, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 05/02/2024 – 05/02/2027.

ASWB CE hours are accepted by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services.

In Wisconsin, licensed psychologists (LPs) must complete 40 hours of board-approved continuing education (CE) during every two-year renewal cycle, with the renewal deadline on February 28 of each odd-numbered year. Of these, at least 6 hours must be in ethics, risk management, or jurisprudence. Psychologists newly licensed within their first full two-year period are exempt from these CE requirements. Approved CE activities may be completed through programs recognized by organizations such as the APA, NASP, CPA, WPA, WSPA, or through graduate-level courses and other board-approved educational providers, including Category 1 AMA or AOA programs. This ensures that licensed psychologists maintain current knowledge and uphold ethical standards in professional practice.

Wisconsin does not impose additional or “supervisor-specific” continuing education requirements for licensed psychologists who provide clinical supervision. Instead, psychologists serving as supervisors must maintain their license by meeting the state’s general renewal CE requirements. Under Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) rules and W.A.C.§ Psy 4.025 and Psy 4.035, Licensed Psychologists must complete 40 hours of continuing education every two-year biennium (October 1 of an odd-numbered year through September 30 of the next odd-numbered year). At least 6 of the 40 hours must be in ethics, risk management, or jurisprudence, and all required topic areas are included within (not added on top of) the 40-hour total. Acceptable CE sources include APA-approved providers, state psychological associations, Category 1 AMA/AOA programs, graduate-level psychology coursework, and certain professional activities (subject to credit caps). No CE is required during the first biennium following initial licensure, and psychologists must retain documentation of completed CE in case of audit.
