Clinical supervisors are expected to guide others with confidence, yet few are taught to recognize that their own supervisory identity, judgment, and use of authority also develop over time. Without this perspective, normal developmental challenges can feel like personal inadequacy, contribute to imposter feelings, and lead supervisors to repeat inherited approaches without fully examining whether those patterns actually serve today’s supervisees.
This course offers clinical supervisors and professionals preparing for supervision an opportunity to view their growth through a clear developmental framework. By recognizing where they are in their supervisory journey, participants can better understand their current strengths, identify areas for growth, and approach supervision with greater intention and self-awareness.
Amie Bryant, LCSW, CAS, ACS, is a psychotherapist, clinical supervisor, and trainer with more than 20 years of experience in mental health. A CCE-Approved Clinical Supervisor with a Certificate in Advanced Clinical Supervision from Smith College School of Social Work, she has extensive experience providing supervision, consultation, professional training, and graduate-level instruction. Her relational, culturally affirming, and use-of-self–centered perspective equips participants to examine not only what they do as supervisors, but also how their professional histories and evolving identities influence their work.
Through live instruction, guided reflection, and case-based learning, Amie introduces the novice, developing, and seasoned stages of supervisor development and explores the characteristic strengths, challenges, and growth tasks associated with each phase. Participants will apply this framework to their own experiences, consider how previous supervision relationships have shaped their current practices, and identify practical directions for continued development.
Topics include the progression of supervisory identity across the professional lifespan; the characteristics of novice, developing, and seasoned supervisors; and developmental changes in confidence, structure, feedback style, decision-making, and the use of authority. The course also examines common challenges such as imposter feelings, uncertainty about competence, unexamined supervisory patterns, and the increasing complexity supervisors encounter as they gain experience. Participants will consider how self-assessment, professional history, and awareness of their own developmental needs can support more responsive and effective supervision.
Key Takeaways
- Understand your developmental stage: Recognize how supervisory identity and effectiveness evolve over time and how your current stage may influence your confidence, decisions, and responses to supervisees.
- Distinguish strengths and growth needs: Identify the characteristic assets, challenges, and developmental tasks associated with novice, developing, and seasoned supervisors.
- Plan your continued growth: Assess your current supervisory development and identify focused strategies for becoming more intentional, adaptable, and effective in the role.
Why This Course?
- A developmental perspective: Move beyond learning supervision models and techniques to understand how supervisors themselves grow, change, and respond to increasing complexity throughout their careers.
- Experienced, reflective guidance: Learn from a seasoned clinical supervisor and trainer whose approach integrates extensive practice experience with relational, culturally affirming, and use-of-self–centered supervision.
- Practical, clinically relevant learning: Participate in a Telehealth Certification Institute training designed to help behavioral health professionals translate professional insight into more responsive supervision and stronger support for supervisees and their clients.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze stages of development in clinical supervisors and integrate this awareness to refine supervisory identity, effectiveness, and responsiveness over time.
- Differentiate characteristics, strengths, and challenges associated with novice, developing, and seasoned supervisors.
- Assess their current stage of supervisory development and identify targeted strategies to support continued growth and effectiveness.
Effective clinical supervision requires more than technical knowledge; it also depends on a supervisor’s willingness to evaluate, adapt, and continue developing over time. This live webinar provides a thoughtful framework for understanding that progression so participants can approach their supervisory role with greater clarity, respond more intentionally to supervisee needs, and support both professional growth and quality client care.
