Self Disclosure Micro Skills Activity banner

Knowing when and how to self-disclose is one of the most nuanced judgments a therapist can make. A strategic, client-focused disclosure can instantly deepen rapport and normalize a client's experience, but the line between helpful and harmful is razor-thin.

This interactive skills lab provides a confidential space to master the art of strategic self-disclosure, using an AI instructor to guide you in identifying appropriate moments, formulating your words, and refocusing on the client.

Your Role

  • Learn from the AI instructor how to identify the therapeutic purpose and appropriate opportunities for self-disclosure.

  • Engage in a practice loop where you formulate brief, purposeful disclosures in response to client scenarios.

  • Practice the crucial final step of delivering the disclosure and immediately and effectively refocusing the conversation back on the client.

Goals of the Activity

  • Develop mastery in the strategic use of self-disclosure to build rapport, normalize experiences, and model effective coping.

  • Learn to confidently distinguish between client-focused disclosures and unhelpful sharing while maintaining firm professional boundaries.

  • Refine your ability to formulate disclosures that are brief, relevant, and always serve a clear therapeutic purpose.

After the Session

At the activity's conclusion, a consolidation phase will help you thoughtfully integrate this skill into your ethical practice with:

  • A comprehensive summary of your progress in identifying, formulating, and delivering strategic self-disclosures.

  • A clear overview of your strengths and areas for continued development in using this powerful relational tool.

  • Targeted feedback on maintaining a client-focus during disclosures and tips for enhancing their therapeutic purpose.

Why Choose This Activity?

  • Navigate a Complex Skill: Self-disclosure carries ethical weight. This activity provides a crucial, risk-free environment to practice and gain confidence in this nuanced skill before applying it in a live session.

  • Focus on Client Benefit: Receive instant feedback not just on what you share, but on your ability to keep the disclosure brief and effectively refocus on the client, ensuring the intervention remains therapeutic.

  • Refine your clinical authenticity by learning to use your own experiences in a way that is both genuine and strictly professional.
