How a Psychologist in Illinois Can Serve as a Clinical Supervisor
If you're a licensed psychologist in Illinois looking to supervise individuals completing their postdoctoral psychology experience, it's important to understand the supervision requirements set by the state. This guide explains who qualifies as a supervisor, outlines CE expectations, highlights pitfalls, and introduces resources from the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) to help you maintain best practices.
✅ Illinois Clinical Supervisor Requirements for Psychologists Supervising
The supervisor must be a Licensed Clinical Psychologist.
The supervisor’s license must be in good standing.
The supervisor must be licensed in the state where the postdoctoral experience is completed.
If the supervision occurs in another state, a copy of the supervisor’s vita must be submitted with the VE-PSY form.
The supervision must occur under the supervisor’s order, control, and full professional responsibility.

There is no minimum number of years post-licensure required before a psychologist may supervise in Illinois.
🔄 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements
Illinois does not require specific supervision training for licensed psychologists to provide supervision. Unlike LCPCs or LMFTs, psychologists are not required to complete any CE in supervision as part of their license renewal.
All licensed clinical psychologists must complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, with each license expiring on September 30 of even-numbered years. Required content areas include:
✅ 3 hours in ethics (every renewal cycle)
✅ 3 hours in diversity (beginning with renewals due September 30, 2026)
✅ 1 hour in sexual harassment prevention training (68 Ill. Adm. Code 1130.400)
✅ 1 hour in implicit bias awareness training (68 Ill. Adm. Code 1130.500)
✅ 1 hour in cultural competency training (Required once every 6 years under 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1130.525)
✅ 1 hour in Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias training (Required once every 3 renewal cycles under 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1130.550)
📌 All of the above topic-specific hours count toward the 24-hour total.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Supervision Hours Not Counted Due to Improper Documentation
Supervision must be accurately logged and verified. Use the official IDFPR forms and maintain consistent records of dates, hours, and supervision content.Supervisor Not Meeting Eligibility Requirements
If the supervisor's license is inactive or encumbered during supervision, the hours will not count. Supervisors must be fully licensed, active, and in good standing during the entire supervisory period.

Recommended Courses
30 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle: Ideal for those needing to meet the 24-hour CE requirement for psychology license renewal while focusing on supervisory skills. This bundle includes training on supervision models, ethics, documentation, and cultural competency.
Clinical Supervision Certificate Program: This in-depth 49-hour CE program strengthens essential competencies in areas such as cultural competency, ethical and legal issues, telesupervision, and advanced supervisory techniques. It provides more than enough total CE hours toward Illinois’ 24-hour renewal requirement, but any required topic-specific trainings (including Sexual Harassment Prevention and Alzheimer’s/Dementias) must be completed as required separately.
Note (Illinois CE requirements): These programs can help you meet Illinois’ 24-hour total CE requirement and cover supervision-focused topics (e.g., ethics and cultural competency/implicit bias-related content, where applicable). However, we do not currently offer Illinois-required 1-hour Sexual Harassment Prevention Training or 1-hour Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias Training. Licensees should complete those requirements through another approved provider if needed for their renewal cycle.
