How a Psychologist in Michigan Can Serve as a Clinical Supervisor

How a Psychologist in Michigan Can Serve as a Clinical Supervisor

If you’re a Michigan-licensed psychologist researching how to serve as a supervisor in Michigan, this guide distills the Michigan clinical supervisor requirements, supervision structure, renewal CE, and pitfalls that can derail hours. It also shows how TCI can help you meet Michigan LP supervision CE efficiently and confidently.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

Who may supervise (license type, experience)

  • Be a psychologist who has a license other than a limited license. Michigan’s statute governing psychology licensure and supervised experience (MCL 333.18223) establishes that post-degree experience must be completed under the supervision of a psychologist who holds a license other than a limited license (i.e., a fully licensed psychologist).

  • If a fully licensed psychologist is unavailable: supervision may be provided by a psychologist with at least a master’s degree in psychology and 3+ years of psychology practice, or another individual approved by the board (pre-approved)

🧾 What the Supervisor Must Attest To (Board Form Conditions)

Michigan’s Psychology Supervision Evaluation form (Rev. 6/25) requires supervisors to certify the supervision met all conditions below (also outlined in R 338.2569(4)):

  • License in good standing: Must certify that the applicant obtained psychology experience under your supervision while your license was in good standing.

  • Appropriate setting & clinical scope: Duties performed must have included assessment, evaluation, and treatment and were performed in an organized health care setting.

  • Availability & responsibility: Must have been available on a regularly scheduled basis, continuously available for direct communication, and assumed ultimate responsibility for the practice of the applicant.

  • Minimum contact for post-degree supervision: (If Post Degree Experience) Must have met with the applicant individually and in person weekly for at least 4 hours a month.

  • Alternative supervision requires pre-approval: Any alternative supervision arrangement from a fully licensed psychologist requires a written request submitted prior to supervision.

🔁 Renewal / Ongoing Continuing Education Requirements

Michigan does not have additional “supervisor-specific” CE. Supervisors keep their psychologist license current under the general CE rules (R 338.2581):

  • 30 CE hours in the 2 years immediately before you apply to renew your psychologist (or limited psychologist) license.

  • Keep CE documentation for 4 years after applying. Failure to comply violates MCL 333.16221(h).

  • Waiver requests must be submitted at least 30 days before the last regularly scheduled Board meeting prior to license expiration.

  • Content & limits for the 30 hours (R 338.2583):

    • Max 12 hours may be earned in any single 24-hour period.

    • No limit on online hours.

    • 2+ hours in pain & symptom management.

    • 3+ hours in ethics.

    • Implicit bias training (must meet standards in R 338.7004) completed in the 2 years before renewal may count toward the 30 if it meets rule criteria.

⚠️ Pitfalls to avoid

  • Using a limited-licensed supervisor
Supervision must be by a fully licensed psychologist unless the Board pre-approves an alternative in writing beforehand.

  • Skipping prior approval for an alternative supervisor
If you cannot secure a fully licensed psychologist, you must obtain written approval from the Board before supervision begins.

  • Missing form-based requirements
Failure to document an organized health care setting, assessment/evaluation/treatment duties, continuous availability, regularly scheduled meetings, and weekly contact totaling ≥4 hours/month (for post-degree) risks rejected hours. Mirror the form’s attestations in your records.
