How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Arizona as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
If you’re a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Arizona, becoming an approved clinical supervisor is a meaningful way to shape the future of the profession. But before you begin supervising, it’s essential to meet the specific standards set by the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners. This guide walks you through the exact Arizona clinical supervisor requirements, citing the official code sections, identifying the key training requirements, and helping you avoid costly supervision mistakes.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To be approved to supervise MFTs and other behavioral health professionals in Arizona, you must meet the qualifications outlined in R4-6-212 of the Arizona Administrative Code.
A supervisor must be:
“A clinical social worker, professional counselor, independent marriage and family therapist, or independent substance abuse counselor who holds an active and unrestricted license issued by the Board and has complied with the educational requirements specified in R4-6-214.”
— R4-6-212(A)(1)
Alternatively, a licensed psychologist or a behavioral health provider working under specific federal authority may qualify, as long as they also meet the education standards in R4-6-214.
The board only accepts supervision hours from individuals who were qualified under R4-6-212(A) and employed at the site where the supervision occurred, unless an exemption was obtained under R4-6-212.01.
🧑🏫 Clinical Supervisor Educational Requirements
Under R4-6-214(A), supervisors must complete one of the following:
1. Twelve (12) hours of training in clinical supervision that meets the standard in R4-6-802(D) and includes:
Role and responsibilities of a clinical supervisor
Skills for overseeing supervisees’ diagnosis, treatment planning, and clinical care
Supervisory methods and techniques
Fair and accurate evaluation of supervisees’ clinical competence
Knowledge of the provision of supervised practice described in R4-6-217
Knowledge of Arizona statutes and rules relating to exemptions to licensure
OR hold a valid certification from one of the following:
The National Board for Certified Counselors/Center for Credentialing and Education (NBCC/CCE)
The International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC)
Be a clinical member with an approved supervisor designation from AAMFT
AND
All supervisors, regardless of the pathway above, must also complete the three clock hour Clinical Supervision Tutorial on Arizona Statutes and Regulations.
— R4-6-214(A)(2)
⚠️ Note: TCI does not provide the three clock hour Clinical Supervision Tutorial on Arizona Statutes/Regulations.
🔁 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements
To continue supervising:
Supervisors who qualified through the 12-hour training must complete, every three years:
At least nine (9) hours of continuing education in clinical supervision, that:
Meets R4-6-802(D) standards
Must cover the same topics outlined in R4-6-214(A)(1)(a)
Must include the 3-hour Arizona Clinical Supervision Tutorial
⭐ Note: Beginning January 1, 2027, these requirements will update slightly under R4-6-214(B):
The minimum 9 hours of CE will still be required, but:
Training must meet R4-6-802(E) (updated standard)
Must address supervision-specific topics listed in R4-6-214(B)(1)
Still include the 3-hour Arizona Statutes/Regulations Tutorial
Supervisors certified through NBCC, IC&RC, or AAMFT must:
Maintain current national certification
Complete the 3-hour Arizona Clinical Supervision Tutorial every three years
These requirements are detailed in R4-6-214(B) and (C) of the Arizona Administrative Code.
⚠️ Note: TCI does not provide the 3-hour Arizona Clinical Supervision Tutorial.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Supervision isn’t just about credentials—it’s also about following the process. According to R4-6-212(C-H), these are the reasons supervision hours may be denied:
1. Supervisees Not Being Registered
Supervision must be conducted by someone qualified and employed at the same site where supervision takes place—unless exempt. This must be verified through proper Board documentation.
2. Improper Documentation
Supervisors must maintain contemporaneous records for at least 7 years that include:
Date, duration, and format (group or individual)
Detailed topics discussed and demonstrated skills
Supervisor and supervisee names and signatures
Documentation of supervisory review of the supervisee’s clinical work
3. Not Meeting Format Requirements
Supervision must include:
At least 2 hours face-to-face every six months
No more than 15 hours of clinical supervision were provided by telephone.
At least 10 hours of supervisor observation of client sessions
Minimum 25 hours of individual supervision
Group supervision must follow Board ratios (e.g., max 50 hours with 3–6 supervisees)
Failure to follow any of these specifications could result in rejected supervision hours.

⚠️ Important Arizona Requirement Notice
Under R4-6-214(A)(1)(a), Arizona requires supervision training that includes:
Skills for overseeing supervisees’ diagnosis, treatment planning, and clinical care.
While our supervision trainings cover core supervisory models, ethics, evaluation, and methods, they may not specifically focus on supervising diagnostic formulation, treatment planning decisions, and direct clinical care oversight.
If you have not completed supervision-focused education that explicitly addresses overseeing supervisees’ assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, you may need an additional course that satisfies this requirement.
Additionally, this bundle does not include Arizona-specific statutory or regulatory content required under R4-6-214, including:Knowledge of supervised practice under R4-6-217
Knowledge of Arizona statutes relating to licensure exemptions
The required 3-hour Arizona Clinical Supervision Tutorial
Arizona licensees must complete the 3-hour Arizona Clinical Supervision Tutorial separately, as required by the Board. Please verify that your total education meets all elements outlined in R4-6-214 before applying for supervisor approval.
