How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Minnesota as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

If you’re a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Minnesota, earning board-approved supervisor status allows you to mentor new professionals, deepen your expertise, and make a lasting impact on the quality of mental health care in the state. However, Minnesota clinical supervisor requirements are specific—if you miss even one detail, your supervisee’s hours may not be counted toward licensure.

This guide explains the Minnesota supervision training requirements for MFT’s, outlines the CE needed for renewal, highlights pitfalls, and shows how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet both initial and ongoing continuing education requirements.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

The Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy grants “board-approved supervisor” status to LMFTs who meet specific professional experience and training benchmarks outlined in Minnesota Rules 5300.0160.

You can qualify in one of two primary ways:

1. Minnesota LMFT Pathway

  • Hold an active Minnesota LMFT license

  • Have at least four years of licensure and a minimum of 4,000 hours of direct clinical practice as an LMFT

  • Complete a board-approved supervision training program, which may be any of the following:

    • A graduate-level supervision course (minimum of three semester hours) from a regionally accredited institution

    • An AAMFT-approved supervisor training course (minimum 30 hours)

    • A 30-hour board-approved MFT supervision education course

2. AAMFT-Approved Supervisor Pathway

  • Hold the Approved Supervisor designation from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)

In either case, you must apply to the Minnesota Board and receive formal approval before providing board-approved supervision.

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

Once approved, LMFT Supervisors in Minnesota must complete 40 hours of Board-approved continuing education every two years (renewing in odd-numbered years). This must include at least 3 hours in ethics (MN Rule 5300.0320.2), 4 hours in supervision training and skills (MN Rule 5300.0170(D)), and 4 hours in cultural competency (MN Statute 148B.31(b)) focused on serving diverse populations.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • 1. Supervisees Not Being Registered
Always ensure your supervisee is in the correct pre-licensure status with the Minnesota Board before supervision begins—hours earned before registration do not count.

  • 2. Incomplete Documentation
    Maintain detailed records, including:

    • A signed supervision contract before sessions start

    • Logs showing dates, duration, and focus of supervision sessions

    • Periodic written evaluations

  • 3. Not Meeting Requirements at the Time of Supervision
You must already hold full supervisor approval before providing any supervision for licensure purposes.

📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Can Support Supervision Skills

The Telehealth Certification Institute offers continuing education (CE) courses only. Our programs help enhance the skills needed for effective, ethical supervision. However, they are not pre-approved by the Minnesota Board to fulfill CE requirements.

⚠️ Important Note on Minnesota Board Approval
While the courses listed below meet Minnesota's required content and hour benchmarks for LMFT supervisor training (as defined in Rule 5300.0160), they are not automatically board-approved.

According to Minnesota Rule 5300.0320, Subp. 6–8, all continuing education activities must be approved by the Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy. Approval may be obtained either:

  • By the course sponsor (such as TCI) submitting the course for board approval (Subp. 7), or
  • By a licensee submitting the course for individual approval to the Board (Subp. 8).
Supervisors intending to use these courses for initial board-approved supervisor status or CE renewal must ensure prior approval is obtained.
