How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Ohio as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
Becoming an approved clinical supervisor in Ohio allows Independent Marriage and Family Therapists (IMFTs) to mentor emerging professionals while advancing their own careers. But before you can supervise, you must hold a training supervision designation granted by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage & Family Therapist Board.
This article explains the Ohio clinical supervisor requirements, the renewal CE obligations, pitfalls to avoid, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet your supervision CE needs.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
According to Ohio Administrative Code Rule 4757-29-01(H), to qualify for a training supervision designation, MFTs must meet the following requirements:
Who may provide supervision
“After January 1, 2015, only independent marriage and family therapists who have obtained a training supervision designation may provide training supervision.” – OAC 4757-29-01(H)(1)
Eligibility for a training supervision designation
Applicants must apply to the Board and meet one of the following:
Path A: Be an AAMFT Approved Supervisor who also holds an Ohio independent MFT license in good standing. (OAC 4757-29-01(H)(2)(a))
Path B: Hold an Ohio independent MFT license in good standing and show evidence of both:
At least two years of post-licensure clinical experience as an IMFT.
Completion of the AAMFT 30-hour supervision course or an equivalent course approved by the MFT professional standards committee. (OAC 4757-29-01(H)(2)(b)(i–ii))

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
Once you hold the IMFT-S designation, you must complete continuing education every renewal cycle to maintain both your license and your supervision designation.
According to Ohio Administrative Code Rule 4757-9-01:
30 hours of CE are required every two years for MFT and IMFT license renewal.
3 of the 30 hours must be in ethics CE.
IMFTs with supervision designation (IMFT-S) must also complete 3 supervision CE hours every two years.
⚖️ Important Clarification for IMFT-S Supervision CE
OAC Rule 4757-9-01(A)(2) specifies:
“Only the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy supervision refresher course or an equivalent course, as defined in paragraph (F)(3) of rule 4757-29-01 of the Administrative Code, may be used to meet this requirement.”

⚖️ Important Note on Supervision CE for IMFT-S
Requirements for maintaining the training supervision designation vary depending on your status (OAC 4757-29-01(H)(3–4)):
If you have NOT completed the AAMFT 30-hour supervision course or refresher → Before renewal, you must complete a 3-hour AAMFT-approved supervision refresher course (or equivalent approved by the MFT professional standards committee).
If you HAVE completed the AAMFT 30-hour supervision course or refresher → You must complete 3 CE hours in supervision (including ethics of supervision) every renewal cycle.
If you are an active AAMFT Approved Supervisor → At renewal, you must provide proof of active AAMFT status. You are exempt from the additional 3 supervision CE hours.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Improper documentation
Supervision logs must include session dates, goals, and content, with quarterly supervisor signatures. Missing or incomplete records can invalidate hours.Supervisors lacking designation
An IMFT must already hold the training supervision designation (IMFT-S) before beginning to supervise. Any supervision hours provided prior to obtaining this designation will not be accepted by the Board.
