How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Virginia (LCSW Guide)

If you’re a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Virginia wondering how to become an approved clinical supervisor, this guide walks you through the key steps and requirements. Whether you're hoping to give back to the profession or grow your own practice, understanding Virginia clinical supervisor requirements is crucial to providing valid and ethical supervision.

🧑‍⚖️ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

To serve as a board-approved clinical supervisor for LCSW licensure in Virginia, you must meet the following criteria outlined in 18VAC140-20-50(B) and Guidance Document 140-9 from the Virginia Board of Social Work:

  • Hold an active, unrestricted LCSW license in Virginia
Note: The Virginia Board of Social Work may also consider supervision from qualified professionals in other jurisdictions who meet equivalent standards. This includes individuals who were not licensed or not designated as clinical social workers if their jurisdiction did not require licensure or that specific designation at the time.

  • Have at least two years of post-licensure clinical social work experience

  • Complete professional training in supervision, satisfied in one of the following ways:
A note for clarity: While the first two criteria above are prerequisites based on your license and experience, this is the only additional step that requires taking action (i.e., completing supervision training) before applying to become a board-approved supervisor.

    • A graduate-level, three-credit course in supervision

    • 14 hours of continuing education (CE) in supervision from a provider approved under 18VAC140-20-105

⚠️ Note: At least 7 hours of your supervision training must be completed within the five years immediately preceding your registration as a supervisor.
This recency requirement applies after you’ve completed either the graduate-level course or the 14-hour CE path. If all of your supervision training was completed more than five years ago, you will need to take at least 7 additional CE hours to meet the current requirement.

🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

To maintain your LCSW license in Virginia (whether or not you're a supervisor), you must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years. This must include:

  • At least 6 hours in ethics, and

  • CE hours provided by a sponsor approved under 18VAC140-20-105, which includes the Telehealth Certification Institute

If you are a board-approved supervisor, there is an additional requirement:
✅ You must complete at least 7 hours of supervision-specific CE every 5 years to remain eligible to supervise LCSW candidates.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Supervisee not registered. Supervision must not begin until the Board approves and registers the supervisee and the supervisory contract.

  • Missing qualifications. If the supervisor lacks two years of post-licensure experience or hasn’t met the supervision-training requirement, hours won’t count.

  • Improper documentation. Maintain a signed supervisory contract, session logs, and all required submissions—and keep documentation, for five years post-supervision, of which clients were the subject of supervision.

  • Failure to notify the Board of changes. You must notify the Board of any change in supervision or when supervision ends or is terminated by the supervisor; failing to do so can jeopardize supervisee hour approval.

Virginia may deny credit if these requirements are unmet.
