How to Qualify as a Clinical Supervisor in Ohio (LISW-S Guide)
Becoming an approved clinical supervisor as a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) in Ohio is a significant opportunity to support the development of future professionals. In this guide, you'll learn the Ohio clinical supervisor requirements, including eligibility, continuing education expectations, renewal rules, and potential pitfalls.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To become an approved clinical supervisor in Ohio, LISWs must meet the following requirements outlined in Rule 4757-23-01 of the Ohio Administrative Code:
Hold an active Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) license.
Maintain a training supervision designation (LISW-S).
Have at least one year of post-licensure experience as an LISW.
Complete nine hours of supervision training that meets Board requirements.
The Ohio CSWMFT Board accepts ASWB-approved continuing education (CE) for this requirement.
The CE certificate must explicitly state ASWB approval.
Licensees must upload their certificates to CE Broker, selecting ASWB as the approving body.
Note: The Ohio CSWMFT Board does not directly approve any provider or program. No advertisement, website, certificate, or promotional material may state or imply Board approval.
The supervision content must specifically address supervision of licensees working toward their LIS (not general workplace or managerial supervision).
Required content areas include:Major models of supervision for social work
Development of a personal model of supervision
Dynamics of licensee–client and supervisor–licensee–client relationships
Distinctive issues that arise in supervision
Contextual variables (culture, gender, ethnicity, power, economics)
Ethical, legal, and regulatory issues in supervision
The role of evaluation in supervision
Apply for the training supervision designation via the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist (CSWMFT) Board’s eLicense portal.

Supervisors must also demonstrate competence in supervision theory and ethics, provide legally compliant documentation, and submit evaluations within 30 days.
🔄 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements
Once you hold the LISW-S designation, you must meet specific CE requirements during each renewal cycle:
Complete 30 hours of CE every two years, which is required for all LISWs in Ohio.
Of those 30 hours:
3 hours must be in ethics (required for all social workers)
3 hours must be in clinical supervision, specific to supervising licensees working toward their LISW
Important: Supervision-related CE courses must be ASWB-approved, not general management or administrative supervision. CE certificates must clearly show ASWB approval and be uploaded to CE Broker.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Incomplete documentation — You must maintain signed logs detailing dates, goals, content, and supervisee progress, and upload evaluations within 30 days.
Supervisor designation expired or not held — Supervision counts only if the supervisor held the correct designation at the time of supervision.
