Behavioral health clinicians are increasingly expected to provide coordinated, integrated care across mental health, substance use, and medical disciplines—but few have been adequately trained to do this via telehealth. This course helps clinicians rise to that challenge with clarity, confidence, and clinical excellence. As clients present with increasingly complex needs in a world still relying on virtual care, providers need solutions—not more questions—about how to ethically and effectively assess, treat, and document care for this population. This training delivers exactly that. Dr. Malcolm Horn, PhD, LCSW, LAC, SAP, MAC, brings over a decade of front-line experience in mental health and addiction services. Her leadership in continuing education, supervision, and program development, along with her deep expertise in co-occurring disorders and rural behavioral health, makes her uniquely qualified to guide clinicians through the intricacies of integrated telehealth care. As a seasoned educator and national leader, Dr. Horn presents grounded, field-tested strategies drawn directly from practice. Dr. Horn's approach is grounded in collaboration, pragmatism, and clinical rigor. She brings a systems-informed lens and a realistic understanding of client and clinician challenges—especially when working in under-resourced settings or with high-risk populations. This course is as much about ethical competence as it is about clinical confidence. Topics covered in this course include telehealth-specific considerations for assessment, risk management, and documentation; identifying which clients are or aren’t appropriate for telehealth; coordinating care across providers; confidentiality and compliance issues; and how to maintain clinical judgment in a virtual environment. Dr. Horn also explores how to navigate substance use and mental health conditions when client stability is uncertain, and how to uphold ethical and best-practice standards across multiple systems of care. Integrated Assessment Skills: Learn how to accurately assess clients with co-occurring disorders via telehealth using appropriate screening tools and interview techniques. Ethical Documentation Practices: Understand what and how to document to support clinical decisions and ensure compliance with telehealth regulations. Client Safety & Clinical Boundaries: Gain clear strategies for evaluating client appropriateness for telehealth and maintaining professional boundaries and ethical safeguards. Directly applicable strategies: Learn real-world techniques from a clinician who has faced the same dilemmas you face—and found solutions that work. Nationally respected educator: Dr. Horn’s leadership roles in NAADAC and clinical education reflect her reputation as a trusted expert in integrated behavioral health. Aligned with your mission: Offered by the Telehealth Certification Institute, this course supports your commitment to excellence, ethical practice, and accessible care. Adapt assessment skills for substance-use disorder and mental health including screening tools and interview questions, discern which sub-groups within the SUD and mental health population may not be appropriate for. Employ documentation strategies needed for tele sessions to ensure ethical standards and best practices are being met, illustrate necessary steps to ensuring client safety in tele sessions. Describe potential ethical issues that may arise using telehealth services, understand what policies and procedures must be in place for teleservices. The demands on behavioral health providers have never been greater—but neither has the opportunity to provide meaningful, integrated care. With Dr. Horn’s guidance and the support of the Telehealth Certification Institute, you’ll be prepared to meet that moment. Add this essential training to your toolbox and take the next step in delivering high-quality virtual care. This is a non-interactive, self-study course.
