Colorado CEU Requirements

In Colorado, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) are required to renew their licenses biennially, and they must complete their Continuing Education (CE) activities during the two years immediately preceding each renewal. This CE is referred to as Professional Development Hours (PDH) by the Colorado State Board of Professional Counselor Examiners.

Each renewal cycle, LPCs must accrue a total of 40 PDH to renew their licenses.

Additionally, there is a limitation whereby no more than 20 PDH can be earned from a single Professional Development Activity (PDA) such as coursework, independent learning, and other similar activities within each renewal cycle.

To become an approved clinical supervisor in Colorado, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) must complete specific training and experience requirements established by the Colorado State Board of Licensed Professional Counselor Examiners. These include accumulating 3,000 hours of post-graduate clinical experience and completing either a two-credit graduate course in clinical supervision or six clock-hours of supervision-specific training covering core content areas such as ethics, cultural considerations, and supervision methods. Alternatively, counselors may qualify with an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) certification or a doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP-accredited program. For renewal, clinical supervisors must earn three Professional Development Hours (PDH) related to supervision during each renewal cycle. Colorado does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) to serve as a clinical supervisor. However, to maintain your active LMFT license—and therefore remain eligible to supervise—you must meet the state’s Continuing Professional Competence (CPC) requirements for license renewal.

Under 4 CCR 736-1, Rule 1.18(E), all licensed MFTs must:

• ✅ Complete 40 Professional Development Hours (PDH) every two-year renewal cycle
• ✅ Participate in the CPC Program, which includes:
  • Completing a Professional Practice Survey
  • Creating a Learning Plan based on identified goals
  • Documenting Professional Development Activities (PDAs) aligned with that plan

⚠️ Important: Colorado limits credit to 20 PDH per activity—which means you must complete at least two separate activities (e.g., one course + one webinar) to fulfill the full 40 PDH requirement.

• No more than 20 PDH from a single activity type
• Up to 5 PDH may be carried over from the previous cycle (if earned within 6 months of license expiration)
• PDH documentation must be retained for five years

In Colorado, Psychologists are required to renew their licenses biennially, and they must complete their Continuing Education (CE) activities during the two years immediately preceding each renewal. This CE is referred to as Professional Development Hours (PDH) by the Colorado State Board of Psychologist Examiners.

Each renewal cycle, psychologists must accrue a total of 40 PDH to renew their licenses.

Colorado does not require continuing education (CE) hours specifically to become or remain a clinical supervisor. However, psychologists who provide supervision must maintain an active Colorado psychology license and comply with the state’s Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) requirements to remain eligible to practice and supervise.

Under the rules of the Colorado State Board of Psychologist Examiners, licensed psychologists must demonstrate continuing competency for license renewal, reinstatement, or reactivation. Most psychologists participate in the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program, (outlined in C.R.S. § 12-245-307) which includes completion of at least 40 Professional Development Hours (PDH) per renewal cycle, completion of an optional Reflective Self-Assessment Tool (RSAT), development of learning goals through a Learning Plan, and maintenance of documentation for all PDH earned through approved Professional Development Activities (PDAs). Newly licensed psychologists accrue PDH at a prorated rate of 1.67 hours per month.

While the Colorado Psychology Board does not require specific CE hours for supervisors, many psychologists pursue supervision-focused continuing education as part of their ongoing professional development.
