West Virginia CEU Requirements

In West Virginia, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) are required to renew their licenses every two years, with the renewal period ending on June 30 of even-numbered years. To maintain active licensure, professionals must complete 35 continuing education (CE) hours during each renewal cycle. At least 3 of the 35 CE hours must be completed in ethics, with LPCs required to study the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics and LMFTs the AAMFT Code of Ethics.. In addition, 2 CE hours must be dedicated to veterans’ mental health or the needs of veterans’ families. These requirements are mandatory and ensure that licensees remain informed about ethical standards and the unique needs of critical populations.

To become a Board-approved clinical supervisor in West Virginia, LMFTs must complete one of the following initial supervision training options, as required under Series 8, §27-8-6.2.g.1:

• ✅ A one-semester graduate course in MFT clinical supervision, or
• ✅ A 30-hour continuing education (CE) course in clinical supervision from a Board-approved provider

Once approved, LMFTs must meet the state’s standard license renewal requirement of 35 CE hours every two years, which must include:

• ✔ 3 hours in ethics (AAMFT Code of Ethics–based)
• ✔ 2 hours focused on veterans and/or their families
• ✔ 3 hours in clinical supervision CE (if holding the Approved Licensed Professional Supervisor designation)

West Virginia permits continuing education through Board-approved providers, approved programs, home study approval, or post-program approval as outlined in Series 3 of the Legislative Rules.

Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) is not currently designated as a Board-approved provider under §6.2.b. Licensees are responsible for verifying CE eligibility under Series 3 requirements prior to enrollment.

Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers continuing education programs for professional development. Acceptance toward West Virginia licensure renewal is determined by the West Virginia Board of Examiners in Counseling.

Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6693. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

NBCC CE hours are accepted by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for licensed professional counselors.

The Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC has not applied to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) for CE approval.

In West Virginia, all regular licensed social workers— including LCSW, LSW, LGSW, and LICSW—must renew their licenses every two years and complete a minimum of 30 Board-approved Continuing Education (CE) hours per renewal cycle. This requirement, updated as of July 1, 2022, reflects a reduction from the previous 40-hour mandate. Within the required 30 CE hours, licensees must complete at least 1 hour in social work ethics and 2 hours focused on mental health conditions specific to veterans and their families. The West Virginia Board of Social Work mandates that at least 10 CE hours be completed through synchronous (live) instruction, which may be delivered in-person or virtually through platforms such as Zoom. Additionally, social workers may complete up to 10 hours of asynchronous, self-paced online coursework, offering flexibility in meeting CE obligations.

To serve as a clinical supervisor in West Virginia, you must complete 6 hours of Board-approved continuing education (CE) in clinical supervision. This pre-service training must address supervision practices and methods relevant to clinical social work and must be completed prior to initiating supervision.

While there is no supervision-specific CE required to maintain supervisor status, LICSWs must complete 30 CE hours every two years to keep their license active and remain eligible to supervise. These must include:

• At least 20 hours from Board-approved providers (Category I), which must include:
  • 10 hours of synchronous/live training (in-person or live webinar)
  • Up to 10 hours of asynchronous/self-paced training
  • 2 hours in mental health conditions specific to veterans and their families
• 1 hour in social work ethics
• Up to 10 hours from independent study or professional activities (Category II)

The Telehealth Certification Institute offers several courses that fulfill both the supervisor training and license renewal requirements:

Telehealth Certification Institute LLC, #1609, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 05/02/2024 – 05/02/2027.

ASWB CE hours are accepted by the West Virginia Board of Social Work.

Licensed Psychologists (LPs) in West Virginia are required to renew their licenses every two years and must complete a total of 20 Continuing Education (CE) hours during each renewal cycle. Of these, at least 3 hours must focus on ethics, and 2 hours must address mental health conditions common to veterans and their families, reflecting the state’s emphasis on ethical practice and veteran care. In addition, at least 10 CE hours must be earned through APA or NASP-approved providers, ensuring high-quality, relevant educational content. For psychologists who are dually licensed, such as those holding a secondary credential (e.g., school psychologist), an additional 3 CE hours are required in their secondary area of practice.

West Virginia has an approval-based supervisor pathway: to become a Board Approved Supervisor, you must complete either a 3-hour graduate supervision course or at least 14 hours of Board-approved supervision training that is APA-approved, specifically focused on supervision of psychologists, and provided by a licensed psychologist, and then submit documentation to the Board and receive approval before beginning supervision.

Once approved, West Virginia does not impose any additional “supervisor-only” CE beyond normal license renewal—meaning you maintain supervisor eligibility by keeping your psychologist license active. Under the Board’s CE Guidelines, Licensed Psychologists must complete 20 CE hours every 2 years, including 10 hours from APA- or NASP-approved providers, 3 hours in ethics, and 2 hours on mental health conditions common to veterans and their family members as part of the 20-hour total; psychologists should also retain certificates/forms in case of audit at renewal time.

The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support both the supervisor-training and renewal needs with structured options like a 15 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle (to exceed the 14-hour supervision-training pathway criteria), a 20 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle (to cover the 20-hour biennial renewal total - excluding the veterans’ mental health topic), and a veterans-focused option such as the Clinical Military Counseling Certificate Program to help satisfy the required 2 veteran-focused hours (plus deeper training via the Clinical Supervision Certificate Program—49 CE hours if you want a comprehensive pathway).

The West Virginia Board of Examiners of Psychologists accepts courses from any provider who is approved by the American Psychological Association.
