Description

“Creating A Vision: Supervising Family Therapists To See The How”

Families come into therapy feeling failed.  They are ready to begin by answering questions about what has gone wrong in their closest relationships.  Family therapy is an opportunity to see the How.  How does a family find its connection?  How do they find their strength? How do they decide to do what they do? How does a family assign power and privilege?  Seeing this how begins early in the sessions to identify and give meaning to the strengths of the family.  From the lens of strength, the family story evolves to a story of possibility rather than of failure.  This vision of possibility is identified and discussed early in the work.  The therapeutic discourse is co-created.  It is a transactional process.  Supervisors shape new clinicians away from what is wrong to how the family does as well as it does.  The sessions focus on Universals, Ways of knowing, Metaphors, and Meaning.   The ways in which power and privilege are enacted and experienced in and outside of the family shape the realities of families' lives and are made visible through therapeutic discourse.  Holding the realities of peoples' family lives is a dance, whose movement is away from content to process, then to noticing the patterns, and then to embracing the family themes.  The movement is away from what to how.   Supervisors understand parallel process, and create an environment of firmness and kindness to mentor therapists who create therapeutic environments of firmness and kindness.

The following content points are covered:

  1. Creating a shift to second-order change
  2. The effect of inequities in power and privilege
  3. Creating a space for emotional risk

This is a non-interactive self-study course.

Instruction consists of 1 hour of video instruction and a post-test.
