Description

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented challenges throughout behavioral health care, including for Certified Peer Specialists (CPS) who rely on maintaining close, supportive relationships with the people they serve. Telehealth has been in use by peer specialists for nearly two decades but the pandemic has made it the primary, and sometimes sole way support services are provided. CPSs have been forced to innovate new techniques for maintaining and reinforcing peer to peer relationships. This workshop will examine some of the techniques being used by peer specialists around the country. An essential quality of peer support is to “meet people where they are” and in order to accomplish that it is necessary that the peer specialist is able to empathize with the individuals circumstances, including the fear, isolation, and loneliness brought on by the pandemic. Peer specialists have accomplished this in a variety of new ways which we will examine.

This is a non-interactive self-study course that was recorded from a live webinar presented by Patrick Hendry on March 24, 2021.

Instruction consists of 1 hour of video instruction and a post-test.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recite at least 3 distinct techniques being used by peer specialists providing Telemental Health.
  • Compare the new innovative techniques to those used in face to face peer support.
