As clinicians, we know that the mental health and overall well-being of LGBTQIA+ youth are profoundly impacted by the level of support they receive from their families. Research consistently demonstrates that family acceptance significantly improves outcomes for LGBTQIA+ youth, leading to higher self-esteem, better academic performance, and increased resilience against mental health issues.

Unfortunately, these youth often face social stigma, discrimination, and isolation, which can lead to depression, anxiety, and other behavioral health issues.

As clinicians, we have a unique opportunity—and responsibility—to bridge the gap between families and their LGBTQIA+ children, empowering them to create a supportive and accepting home environment where queer youth can be themselves without fear of rejection or judgment.

Instructor

Christopher McLaughlin, MSW, LCSW

Chris McLaughlin, MSW, LCSW, (he/him/his), is the Executive Director of the Maine Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and owner of Inspired Consulting Group, LLC. He obtained his BA in Psychology and his MSW from the University of Maine. Chris has spent more than 20+ years as a provider and a leader in behavioral health services for youth and families across a variety of clinical settings. Chris is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maine and Husson University in Bangor.

Additionally, Chris served for four years on the Maine Board of Social Work Licensing and is a member of both the NASW and the Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care (SSWLHC), where he is the current Maine Chapter President, and he is a member of the National Board. Chris holds additional certifications from Cornell University. Nationally, he was SSWLHC’s 2019 recipient of the Eleanor Clark Award and was named Health Care Social Worker of the Year in 2019 by the Maine Hospital Association and the Maine Chapter of the SSWLHC. In 2020, Chris was awarded the Alumni of the Year distinction from the University of Maine School of Social Work.

Credit Hours: This course consists of 2.5 continuing education hours of credit.

How to Complete the Course and Earn Your Certificate

To receive your certificate of completion you must complete the course in its entirety.

To complete an Online Self Study Course, one must register, log in, select the My Courses option from the menu items, click the Course Title, complete all of the modules, complete and pass the post-test(s), and complete the course evaluation.

A grade of at least 80% or more is required to pass the post-test. Retaking the post-test is possible until the participant is able to pass the test.

Psychologists and other professionals seeking CE credit through our approval with the American Psychological Association are asked but not required to complete the course evaluation before obtaining their certificate of completion, however passing a post-test for online self-study courses, and submitting one's attendance for live on-site and live webinars is required.

You can download or print your certificate of completion by logging into your account, navigating to the course by selecting the My Courses option from the menu items, clicking the Course Title, scrolling to the Certificate of Completion section, and clicking on the Certificate of Completion link to either download it or print it.

Participants may request a printed version of their certificate of completion to be delivered by mail. A shipping/handling fee of $6.95 will be charged per request. Shipping internationally may require an additional charge.
